I would recommend caution when creating/playing with your own tank cleaning solutions. If there is gasoline still in the tank, and you add an oxidizing agent, you may find yourself in a hot situation.

^and the sending unit usually fails anyway - this would be the way to go...

+1 on the new tank idea [sm=youreright.gif]
Even if you have to budget it out in order to buy it,it's worth it.

Everybody beat me to it. A new tank really is worth it in both time and money.

Today on NPR's Car Talk (Click & Clack - the MIT boys) a caller had a rusted gas tank. They stated that cleaners/acid solutions do not do a good job with rusted tanks. They talked about an epoxy substance to coat the tank lining but stopped short of such an endorsement. If rust enters your fuel line and it is not adequately filtered by your fuel filter, then you may need a carb rebuild soon.

I agree with Starfury et al. - break the piggy bank and get a new tank. That is what I did - they are not terribly expensive.

Has anyone suggested just to buy a new tank? That's what I would do.

I have to agree with everyone here that getting a new tank is the way to go. I have cleaned out my tank on my 68 and it turned out to be much more of a project than I anticipated. The sending units do fail rather quickly and getting a replacement from unlimited is a smart move. When selecting a tank however, I suggest on getting one with a drain plug, it costs about 25-35 bucks more but is well worth it if you ever need to drop the tank again.

I forgot about that. Excellent suggestion, and I agree well worth the extra cost. Especially if you plan on keeping the car for a long time.
