4.0 v6 w/AOD in 66?
Has anyone tried to put a late model 4.0 v6 with an automatic transmission in a 66 mustang? I have a 66 that originally had a I6 but the previous owner put a 302 in it. I wanta fuel injected engine that will get good gas mileage at cruising speeds for a daily driver. I plan on putting disc brakes on the front but I haven't decided on what to do with the steering. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt a 5.0 will get close to 30 mpg.
I doubt one could get 30MPG on the highway in that car period. It just doesn't have the aerodynamics.Mid to upper 20s at best. Of course it also all depends on your final gearing and how fast you drive on the highway. I would stick with the I-6 or a small V-8. With proper tuning they can get reallygood milage. I don't care for Ford V-6s either... JMHO
Thumbs down on the V6 fords. They have really bad head porblems. The only V6 that I am a fan of is a 4.3 Chevy, but hey, its an ole 350 with 2 cylinders missing. I have a 3.0 liter in my 05 Ranger. I hate it. Its weak and the milage dropped to 17 since they started putting ethonol in the gas. I got more than that with the mustang when it had the 302 in it (close to 20 mpg).If I keep the truck, when I get out of college I want to swap in a 302 out ofa 2000-2001 explorer. They are pretty much a direct swap, just have to change the transmission too. I would want to get one out of a 4x4, because then I could do the solid axle swap and make it a 4 wheel drive (its a 4x2 edge package, but they have a 4x4 frame).
More on 30 mpg...I drive a lot of different rental cars and, mostly hiway miles. My last one was a v8 grand prix; 23 mpg over 400 miles. The 6 and 4 cyl cars do a little better, but they don't even get 30.
My 05 vw passat tdi 2.0 on the other hand gets 35 combined over 48k miles and will get in the low 40s on the hiway, 30+ in the city.
turbo diesel...250 ft-lb trq, not bad

Tyler....if you have a 3.0L Ranger, and you are still in college, you have NEVER driven that truck without having Ethenol in the gasoline....
And comparing the Vulcan 3.0L to ANYTHING ELSE in the Ford V-6 family is like me saying allBuick V8s are crap, because I had 67 Buick with a 340, 2bbl....
The 4.0L OHV had head problems, i.e. cracking @ the exhaust seat
The 4.0L SOHC had timing chain/tensioner issues...
By 1999 the issues on the SOHC had been resolved, and they just stopped making the OHV, as it was the same displacement, but WAY more efficient....
The 4.0L SOHC has since been well proven in the Explorers, and in `05 they put the EXACT same motor in the Mustangs.
There are guys getting 30+ mpg in their Explorers with the SOHCmotor, and 25+ with the OHV....in a vehicle that weighs 4500+!
I am in the process of installing a 2.3L Turbo into my daughters `67 Mustang....so I am nowhere near opposed to seeingsomethingdifferent!
