Well I see you mentione low-budget yet a lot of the posts are anything but. For low-budget to lose the points, you can go pertronix, or you can get a whole NEW distributor for like $60 with an electronic trigger off e-bay. Yes they are going to be import, and I haven't run one, but I'm gonna give one a try myself. Here is a link:

If you are going with a Pertronix setup, which isn't bad, buy two. One to keep in the glovebox.
I had one before I went with the Duraspark II setup and it died on me. Sunday afternoon, 20 miles from nowhere. That ripped it for me. No more.
But, with a Duraspark II setup, I still keep an extra box in the trunk. Just in case.

Thanks all, I got some great input. This is for a basic 16 year old's car (aka, my son). I had several street cars between 16 and 35 and he remembers my last - a 70 Chevelle SS I restored to top condition.
With that, yeah, he gets what he earns which means cheapo-ingenuity based-old fashioned-driveway-American hot rodding. So, seems the pertronix or a used duraspark may be the ticket here.
Billet MSD, Mallory, Crane pro-Curve....I don't think so.
