Default Rear Differential Gasket

it looks like it's seeping a bit. It doesn't look too difficult to remove the cover and replace the gasket....but is it?

Not sure which differentiial you have in her, but if you can drain the 85-90 weight oil first it won't be quite so messy. Put a big pan underneath, then start cracking the bolts a few turns each until the oil is drained then take them all out and take the pumpkin cover off. Clean it up real good, then replace the gasket and replace the cover. There should be a torque guide somewhere. Maybe somebody will chime in with the torque specs for the cover. I have to go cook a standing rib roast, so can't look it up right now. I placed a search sticky at the top. Maybe if nobody comes back with the answer, you can reserch it there, or google it.

What year is your 'Stang?

Do what Soaring said. Get a pan big enough to fit under the whole diff housing, and just start taking the bolts out (From bottom up).

:edit: I found it easier to take the bottom bolts out completely. You might even want to take all the bolts off. Just push on the center of the cover, take them out, then grab the top and pull it away. It will drain alot faster, and should leave less of a mess. Hope ive helped. Let me know about your year, if its a 65-66 I have the torque specs.

thanks, fellas. It is, indeed a 65, and I have the shop manual with the torque settings. It looked pretty easy to do, but I wanted to make sure that was the case prior to starting. Now to find the part number.....

You can just go to any auto parts store and ask for one. They probobly will have to order it though.

Dang, that standing rib roast was good, with all the potatores and veggies. Oh, and I am glad you cracked that pumpkin , drained the oil and replaced the gasket. Now, wasn't that a simple thing to do? Now your job is to get the oil back into the differential. How ya gonna do that?

Your going to have to search through all the gunk, oil, dirt, and crud on the engine side of the diff to find that 1/2' fill plug. Then your going to have to figure out how to get the oil in the diff without making a mess. Allways fun.

What do you suggest for a pump to replace the oil?

IIRC, isn't there a small hand pump for that kind of gear oil?

You lost me at this point, ive never had to fill the oil with the rear axle on the car. The only time I filled mine was when I had the whole rear end out.
