Default convertible motor mounts different?

ok,...

so i installed my brand new power steering unit in my 66 mustang CONVERTBILE, and brand new 302,...when i ordered the engine mounts from CJ Pony's they told me there was no difference from the convertible mounts to the coupe/fastback mounts, they were all the same,...

problem = center link and ram are hitting the oil pan when i turn the wheel,...so i call the company that built the powre steering unit and sent them pics and he said he it installed 100% correct! that i probably have the wrong mounts,...

now i spoke to a friend today who is building a 67 Convertible, and he was in the process of installing his new motor when i stopped by and told me , there is deff different mounts for convertibles,...now his is also power steering and he is NOT having the same problem i am,...he got his mounts at a swap meet, or i would just have ordered them where he got his,...

is this true? if so, where do i get these? and how hard to install now that the motor and trans is in and everything is hooked up?

I happened to have my Mustangs Unlimited catalog next to me when I read your post. They do indeed list different mounts for convertibles. Sounds like the convertible mounts (rubber part) is taller. Mustangs Unlimited part # 2286 for convertibles and 2287 for all others.

ok so WTF WTF WTF, i order the mustangs unlimited "tall" mounts,..i spend a hour jack up the motor and replacing the passenger side first,...after wiggling it out and getting the new one in, i drop the motor down and NO DIFFERENCE,..i put the old new mount next to the new tall mount and they are exactly the same,...

now the first set of mounts i got from CJs and he told me there is no difference for convertibles, but on the box it stated clearly NOT FOR CONVERT!, the new ones from MU, say for convertible, but are the same size,....now,...do you think i got the wrong ones from MU,..wrong mounts or wrong boxes?

i cant figure out this steering thing and its holding me up big time,....my center link is still hitting the oil pan! and the steering unit is installed 100% correct! confirmed!

I am doing a 67 convertible, I was told the mounts are different as to weither they are taller or not I cannot tell you, I called and they (The Paddack) told me I would have trouble if I installed the wrong ones. I don't have power steering.

Default RE: convertible motor mounts different?

I had a hood clearance problem with my 68 convertible recently. I had a point on my EFI setup that barely touched the hood. I wanted to drop the engine about a half of an inch so I purchased some Ron Morris 1/2" drop motor mounts. They actually dropped the engine about an inch. I had to use spacers between the engine and the motor mounts to get the correct drop.

Given my experience I come to the conclusion that the motor mounts are different. I posted this same question on Vintage Mustang Forum in December and most people said they are the same. Go figure. I am still confused if there is an actual difference but I would say there is due to my situation.

Take some pics. Never seen height differences except when you compare 65 to 66+

Yes, smallblock vert mounts are different for 1966 and 68-70(and possibly 71-73, but not too sure on that). In 1967, all of the smallblock mounts are the same, and are a match for the vert mounts for every other year.

The problem is that you cannot buy these mounts new. Period. The company that makes the motor mounts (to my knowledge, there's only one company, but I forget which one atm) dropped the vert/67 motor mounts and claimed they collapsed them into the standard motor mount line. And when you look at the two side by side, they look pretty much identical. The difference is in the location of the mounting hole, which is off by a very small amount, and the location of the mounting holes on the frame brackets. Many places don't understand this and will sell you what their computer tellsthem is a'66-70 sbf motor mount.' Honestly, I'm suprised you got those mounts in at all. I couldn't get one side to line up when I tried on my 67.

Since you actually have a non-67 vert and need the proper clearance, there are only two solutions I'm aware of. Either you can try to find a set of NOS mounts (I think your friend got very lucky), or you can buy the Ron Morris mounts and be done with it forever.

'67 owners have the option of redrilling their frame brackets or simply buying standard 68-70 frame brackets and using the available motor mounts.
