Does anyone have any links to a site that has a chart that you can figure out an engines year with? I was told my 351w came out of a 74, but for all I know it could be 79, or 72, or anything. I tried searching online, but no lukck. Thanks guys!

Do you have the VIN number? If so, go upstairs and use the decoder I have given you. Basically a 351W is a 351W not matter what year during their time.

I bought the engine off a guy who had it in his '67, so I have no VIN.

Take the starter off and see if there is a number behind it.

OOH, you mean the ID on the block. When you said VIN I assumed you were talking about a vehicle identification number. The number on the block is D2AE-8015-BA-10, 3D30. Someone mentioned on here that C9, D0, D1, and D2 designate the strong 69-early 70's motor. I hope the D2 at the beginning of the IDN means its that motor.

The D2 indicates it's a 1972 block. D = the decade 70's, 2 = year of decade.

Here is an engine decoder.....But, according to this decoder you have a 289 engine. Strange.....

That decoder is a VIN decoder, not a part number decoder. The number he provided is a part number. The engine code is the letter that is stamped on the VIN, not the engine part number. A "D" VIN code would indeed be a 289 but a "D" part code indicates that the part was produced in the 1970 decade, no way it could be a 289.

You are correct. I stand corrected. OK, I did some more digging, and here is what I came up with. D2AE is a 1972 block that was used in Galaxies. The D2 being the decade of the 70's and the 2 meaning the year of 1972. The A is the car line, and in this case a Ford Galaxy and the E stands for the engineering department, which in this case is Engine. Check it out. http://www.classicmustang.com/decoding_part_numbers.htm
Now, we just have to figure out what code the engine is in order to get a clearer picture. I am wondering if it is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt main.
Also make sure it is a Windsor, and not a Cleveland. Here is a quick check.

351 Windsor ....... 351 Cleveland
5-bolt straight valve covers ....... 8 bolt 2-plane valve covers
radiator hose to the intake manifold . ...... radiator hose does not connect to intake
regular 5/8" spark plugs ........ small 14mm spark plugs
