Default 6 cyl auto trans question frustrated

I need some help with the correct positioning for the kick down cable and linkage lever at the transmission. I bought the car with the linkage lever looking downward. some one on the site told me that the linkage lever should be attached looking upward. I think the trans. has a built in spring because when you operate it by hand it will return back to its normal position. I seen in a parts magazine that there is supposed to be a return spring for the kick down linkage lever. Why would you need a spring when it returns by itself. I think this is the whole problem that I am having with the shift points on the cruiseomatic. I bought a new kick down cable , adjusted it with the pedal fully depressed having the cable pulling fully on the trans. linkage. Still no change in the shift pattern. No matter which forward gear green dot , or"D" position it always pulls out in 2nd gear, then quickly goes back to 1st briefly, then back to 2nd, It should hit 1st ,2nd , 3rd in green dot . any clues? pics of correct cable and linkage , spring installation?

franko66,
I was searching the archives and saw your post...I need the same photo you do! This weekend the MCA nationals are in Park City (40 miles away) and if I can find a 6 cylinder AT with an open hood I will shoot a bunch of pictures and post them for you. I am trying to put a 68 that I just bought from a kid who chopped and hacked this poor thing to death. I did get a good deal though, so I can deal with the imperfections.
Good luck to you!

I will have to see if my old Mitchell automatic transmission manual has linkage pictures. If your kickdown cable comes off the accelerator cross shaft and hangs down then your lever on the transmission needs to pull forward for kickdown, which, if my memory is correct would require it to point up. The cable needs to pull it completely forward at full throttle. There was an external return spring that went to a bracket on the upper front low-reverse servo cover bolt. On your shifting issue, almost sounds like the curse of the C4, a sticking governor. The kickdown is only for "passing gear", not normal upshifts. They are controlled between modulator pressure and governor pressure in the valve body. The other issue could be a sticking 1-2 shift valve. On my website is some C4 information, I think it is 67-69 though, but it may help.
