Default Problem

I am having a problem with the mustang now. We can't get it to start at all. Also the carb keeps gushing gas out of it. Carb is covered in gas and it is dripping on the exhaust manifold and on the ground. What is wrong? I was thinking we need a carb rebuild kit for it. We were going to get some paint for the new hood and now I can't.

This is the 2nd carb to break. First was a holley 1v and now this FoMoCo 1v.

its not broken

it does not need a rebuild

You need a fuel filter (or better fuel filter) because crap from your tank is getting stuck in the inlet needles and not allowing them to close.

The idea is a fuel flows in into the float bowls. The floats float ontop of the fuel and when the bowl is full the floats cut the incoming fuel supply off by closing the inlet needles....well if there is junk blocking the inlets they cant close and fuel runs unrestricted into the carb and it floods like no other.

Just pull it apart and clean it well and get a better fuel filter and you'll be set.

Good suggestions, Gun Jam. Definitely sounds like a float related problem.

I would check the float level first. Also, check to see that the float does not have any leaks. It will be full of gas if it does have a leak.

One other thought - I have heard of larger-than-necessary (capacity wise) fuel pumps overwhelming the float, too.

Has this carb been working on the engine, or is it a new transplant? Have you modified the fuel system recently?

This carb has been on for the last couple months now. Nothing has been done to the fuel system. This just started after my dad drove it Thursday night. I checked the filter and it is fine. It still drips fuel out from the bottom of the carb. Top is almost dry. Drips until youattemptto start and then it is like it pours out. I am taking the carb off now to get a closer look.

No what i meant was the fuel filter is probably as good as it was when it was new but was crappy when new

Chruncyskippy also had a great suggestion that the float may have a leak and filled with fuel which would cause it to sink. You can easily check then when the carb is apart...(if the float has fuel inside of it then its bad) I still think its dirt caught in the inlet seat...much more likely than the float and easer to fix.

my carb does this too. the float inside the resovoir sticks ever once in a while. normally if i have not driven it in a day or two. i take off the top of the carb and tapp the floater untill its loose. i think that the gas varnishes the contacts of the float and makes it stick.

dont know a permanent solution.

It hasn't been driven in 4 days. I looked and noticed that alot of gas was around where the diaphram is. I am going to order a rebuild kit because I also don't think they aren't good. Once I get that in I will take apart the carb and check the float.

cool let me know how it goes

as for floats sticking after a few days they shouldn't im not sure why bullitt is having that issue. Over summer my car might sit for 2 weeks...Crank for about 10 seconds to prime up the carb and im off. never had one stick from sitting a few weeks.
