Default Replacing wheel Studs on Brake Drum

Hey All... restoring my 67 coupe. I am replacing all braking components and keeping drum brakes for now. I bought new drums but the hub assembly and studs were in good shape. I took the drums to the shop to press out the studs and hub, but the tech said he would not be able to press them on to the new drums. He said put some washers on the studs and tighten the lugs to the hub. That would "pull the studs in to place. That did not seem right. Any thoughts on how to do this or if the tech was right? Should an impact wrench be used? Would normal torque work for this?

I've used that technique before with no issues. An impact wrench will make quick work of the task if you have one.

Just pay attention while using an impact wrench...you don't want to have to make another trip to the shop to have the broken lug pressed out! You'll see when its properly seated.

Be sure to use a stock nut that is threaded all the way through (Not decorative dome nut) and turn the nut around so that the tapered end faces out. This method works fine.

You can use a larger nut for aspace on the shoulder of the stud as well, make sure the splines are lined up and it works fine. The tech probably doesn't want to risk cracking your drum in a press. I've pressed them in before and had no problems but who knows. The method he described works just fine.
