Default Pulling the engine... but

Do I have to pull the trany out at the same time or can I just pull the engine? I was looking under the car and it looks like if I detach and pull the motor then the trany is going to fall. Is there something that I didn't see that is holding the trany in place other than the crossmember?

the tranny can stay in place. You might want to support it when you pull the motor. The cross brace will hold it though.

c4 trans?

you can seperate the engine at bellhousing and just pull the enigne.

watch for:

shift cable or linkage
kickdown cable from throttle to trans.
cooler lines from raidator to trans
Xmember
vac lines

I think thats it

Thanks for your replies but I didn't get that far due to a stripped starter bolt. The top bolt came out nice and easy but the bottom was already slightly rounded so I couldn't even get it to budge. There isn't much room when i'm under the car (big guy) so I couldn't really do much. I tried clamping a vice to the bolt but that didn't do anything.

Any ideas on what I can do?

depends on what tool you were using. I ususally use crapsman, but when i have a troublesome bolt I have my snap on wrenches that have those little teethin them, that usually helps alot. if your using a 12pt socket try a 6pt or pound a size smaller one on and take it off that way. at worst cut and tap a new hole. those are my tips

Has anyone ever used a set like this?

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...id=00952166000

I'm going to pick up the set tomorrow and give it a try.

So I picked up the set in my previous post from Sears and I was able to take off the rounded bolt in less than 1 minute. I highly recommend the set if you don't have something similar.

I think i'm just about ready to pull the motor. I have everything disconnected\removed that I can see including the trans cooler lines, starter, alternator, fuel line, bell housing bolts, vacuum lines, radiator, and carb. Tomorrow when I get home from work i'm going to assemble the hoist and hopefully get everything out by Friday (going to the shop to get a new roof, floors, and bodywork done).

*EDIT* Forgot to ask... Do i have to drain the trany before taking the motor out? If so is there a way to do that other than removing the pan? Sorry for the questions i'm a noob to auto mechanics.

Default Pulled the engine AND trany

Today and pulled out the engine and trany. It went surprisingly well.In fact, I was waiting for something to go wrong because it was going so well but it was really easy!

An hour after the engine was outa guy showed up to pick up the stang and take it over to the shop where the roof will be replaced and then body and paint.

Thanks to all that have helped me with my noobish questions. I'm sure I'll have plenty more when I get the car back in about 3 months.
