650 Holley. what do i do with it?
Okay so a couple of years ago my friend gives me a brand new holley 650 4v. he bought it and put it on his 69 camaro. said it was a little radical. probably because its the 4770 mechanical not vacum. which i read runs a little leaner or richer i cant remember, but basically it was less efficient than the vacum but more responsive.
its still in its original box he got it in.
now my question is will this 650 be overkill for my stock 289? i think it will, some friends say nah itll work, some say no way.l
i know that the HI PO 289s back in teh day came with a 480. 650-480 thats thats 230 cfms difference. and that engine was tuned by ford.
the engine is the stock 200 hp version, the only difference is a 2.5 inch exhaust system and pertronix ignition, which isnt a big deal but i thought id throw that out there.

way too big
do a search around for carb calculators or forumulas.
check this site where you put in your engine size and max rpms and it will tell you the max cfm you can use for 100% efficiency and a more realistic 830ish % efficiency
http://www.4secondsflat.com/Carb_CFM_Calculator.html
it says that the max size you need is a 381cfm.
maybe a coincedence but holleys carb calculator says that their 390cfm is the first choice for the 289.

I'll buy it from you if you wanna let it go. I have a 550 Edelbrock now that I bought as a temporary thing till I found a Holley I liked... let me know if u wanna let it go.
I have an Edelbrock 650 (elec choke) and it works great with my stock 302. This size carb was made for engines of our displacement and you will not be displeased. I'm sure there are many owners here that would agree. This has got to be a common match-up.

cool thanks. perfect, i expected to hear it was too big.
well then i think ill start looking for a 450-500cfm. i want the car to make somwhere near 300hp, and plan on intake mani, heads and cam.
but thats down the road. and im in no hurry to find a carb, mine works fine(stock) i just thought well heck i have this lying around.
ANYONE NEED A 650 HOLLEY? let me know.

its really kinda just all original and mostly OLD. maybe when i get a new intake, heads and cam i can make full use of a 650
but i personally think that a 500 or 550 would be better. i hear all the time that choosing a carb too big is always a problem. i dont want to be another statistic.
