atruggles to shut off

i have a 66 with a 351w. sometimes when shutting off the car, the motor still wants to stay on but then slowly shuts off. doesnt sound to good either. what can this mean?

shut it off while in D. then shift into P.

That's called dieseling. It can be caused by improper timing and/or incorrect heat range spark plugs. First thing I'd check is your timing

Try running a grade higher in fuel if you don't already run premium.

Your idle is too high. My car did that then we lowered the idle. Now it doesn't do it.

idles at 7500 and runs on premium. has about 7,600 miles
