cam selection
I was thinking about getting the edelbrock performer rpm camshaft. I was wondering if anyone has used this cam, what they thought of it, and if it was real lopey sounding. Anyone have any audio clips/ videos of their cars with lopey idle?
Nope, I had one in my 302 (only for a short time) and it sounded stock. Hence why it went bye bye really quickly. Not to mention the quality of mine sucked... 12 of the 16 lobes got wiped even thoughh I ran break in procedure to the T. Go with Comp, much better cams in my opinion. I replaced the Eddy with a XE284H (Comp cam). It has the same powerband, but sounds freaking awesome! Just be sure your heads/valves/springs will work with it.

Yep, the sound comes with the performance. If you buy a cam just to get the sound, it may not perform well in your particular application. I don't think it was the lobes failing that made it sound "stock" because it sounded that way even whenit first started.Ok, so it sounded a little better than "bone stock," but it wasn't lopey enough for me. I liked theComp a lot better. Just my opinion though.
tyler probably meant a performer as an rpm will have a lope in a 302, it isn't the greatest cam anymore, in fact I would look at the comp xe grinds as they are more modern grinds and will make more power and vacuum.

Do I think its the best? NO WAY! But for a mild 289 it sure gets the job done for a good price.

What kind of motor do you have? If it's a stock 289, I would definitely not run that cam. I wouldn't trust stock rod bolts much past 5500, if that much, and that cam will want to spin up quite a bit more than that. That said, it should lope with a 289/302. The wide LSA keeps it semi-tame, but it's still got a fair amount of valve overlap.
For proper cam selection, we need to know more about the car. Engine displacement, transmission (and torque converter, if applicable), rear end gearing, type of driving, whether or not it will see freeway use, planned upgrades in the future... The cam needs to be tailored to the rest of the vehicle.

Right now my 289 is stock except for the 289 performer intake and a 600 cfm eldelbrock carb. This summer I plan on buying aftermarket heads (still debating on whether to run stock cast iron 351W heads, edelbrock rpm's, or afr 185's). As far as tranny I have a c4 right now with the stock converter and am debating on whether to go with a built aod or swap over to the t5. Need to upgrade the rear end, I currently have an 8 inch with 2.80 gears. I will be upgrading to a 9 inch and would like to run 3.55's or lower. This car would be used for an occasional drag strip session/ and cruising. I would like to have a 289 that is eventually going to run around 400 fwhp. Something that will make most people say oh sh*t when you romp on the throttle.
400 HP out of a 289 is possible, but will be hard to achieve. You will need a big cam and big heads. AFR 185s will probably allow enough flow for 400 HP, but I actually dont care for AFRs due to their quality (the lack there of). I have Edelbrocks and I do like them a lot. Very high quality. While they may not be the best flowing heads in the world, they will last a very very long time with no problems. Just be sure that the bottom end is built to handle all of the new found power.
