Default problems with new T5, any ideas what to check? {SOLVED!}

Hi all,

I put the last u-joint in yesterday, so the driveshaft is complete.
FINALLY i can drive the car back and forth .... no more pushing.
After a few more checks I decided to go for a testdrive (slow), which was very disappointing.
When I got quicker I got huge vibrations on the car, which I couldn't really locate, but I brought the car back after only about 500 yards there and back. I assumed that the driveshaft was imbalanced. but then I rechecked when car was idling in neutral

When I rev the car vibrates (it's a mixture between scary and oh ... there's somethign a bit off). I can't really tell if it's something going horribly wrong or maybe if it's a quyickfix.
I went to front of car and revved again (at the carb) and I could not here/feel it anymore. back to the car, pressed accellerator pedal to rev and it was back. So for that I'm convinced it has something to do with the T5.
I start feeling it fro 1500revs and it's getting mad a 3000. further i did not try.

What I'm planning on doing next is:
- check fluid level in trans. maybe is spilled to much when I changed driveshafts or tested or similar
- re-check the transmission crossmember. I must admit that I ruined one of those screws.
There's 2 bolts that are sitting in crossbraces rubber. you tighten nuts over them the nuts were going so hard so that one of the bolts ripped out of the rubber.

Any other ideas on that? what can it be? I can safely rule out driveshaft, axle, wheels/tyres as it happens standing in neutral gear as well ... ? :-(

Did you use your stock fly wheel or did you use the fly wheel off of the donor car that you got the t5 out of. if you used the donor flywheel, that is your problem.

+1 sounds like you have a two different balances between the motor and flywheel. one is 50 oz and one is 28oz

used the stock flywheel.
my car was 1966 289 with 1966 bellhousing.
I pulled the bellhousing together with old 3spd,
removed the 3spd,
brought the bellhousing to the machine shop to fit adapter plate
attached the T5 to my modified bellhousing
attached crossbrace to T5 and then shoved the pair back into my car
The clutch and flywheel left untouched, no changes here

Does that info help ?

then I would check out the pilot bearing, it sounds like it might be bad or incorrect. I can't imagine that much vibration being added from that. There is nothing in the T5 that could cause it to shake like that. all the parts are small balance and if somthing was off you would know about it in all speeds.

i just hope it's something stupid easy ... i'm kinda scared as there's not too much I can do over here.
I'll go over next weekend check on fluid (shouldn't make any difference to vibration) and that crossmember.
Then I'll probably lift the back at rear axle housing and see what it looks like from the underside of the car while it vibrates ...

any other suggestions let me know .. i'm in no mood top pull it all apart [&o]

I had a similar problem before I put my T5 in and it was indeed the pilot bushing. It only affected the car in reverse though. It all depends on the mechanics of the wear as to how you would feel it. Does it vibrate in reverse in addition to the forward gears?

bl00dy thing even does it in neutral, i never checked in reverse as i was going kinda slow. but i can't really remember to feel it there as well.
But what I don't get is why I haven't had this prblem before the swap. everything was fine ?!

in neutral the input shaft still spins. did you check the run out on your bell housing after you installed it??? My car ate the pilot bearing when I install my T5 because the tolerences for the old bell housings were much lower than for the T5 and I did not check the run out prior to the install. I dumped the adaptor plate and went with an actual T5 bell. I would bet 10-1 that it is your pilot bering

with so much money on the pilot bearing I'd join in. I have no other proper explanation that makes any sense.

can you please explain:
did you check the run out on your bell housing after you installed it???
the answer must be no as I have no idea what you're talking about.
... and how hard is it to change that bearing? do i have to drop the clutch? the flywheel? any special tools needed?
I'll order one and make sure to order a new throwout bearing as well ...
