Default Leaky rear windows

Okay so my mach my rear windows leak, at both rear corners. There is no rust there and it is a new piece of weatherstrip and all that. What I've noticed is the water seems to be going where the moulding goes and then seeping through underneath the weatherstrip. It does it on both sides. Is it supposed to do this? I noticed the water simply drips down the wheel wells and then into the drop out and out the drain holes in the rear quarter panel.

What do I need to do? This is holding me up because I'm installing my sound system and am going to have an amp and sub back there so i need to stop the leak. What do I do? Urethane under the weatherstrip AND in the channel where the moulding clips are? It is really bothering me

Thanks in advance

I believe thats because you didnt use the 3M automotive bedding and glazing compound.

You need to fill the channel where the weather strip sits all the way around then install the weather strip and glass as a unit. Then force as much of the bedding compound into the gap between the body and the weather strip.

You can probably just fill that gap between the body and weather strip straight away and not remove the glass again. It should seal then.

Very interesting, and that makes sense. Well i had a professional window guy install my front and rear window so I figured it would have been done right. All he did was put the weatherstrip around the window and pop it in and pull the cord to seal it. He then put like urethane or something on the inside of the weatherstrip, but not where the clips are. I'll probably fill in the gaps with some compound then, it's only a problem on the bottom 6" (Or less) on each side.

dang, now I have to remove the moulding...

Yeah make sure you get the stuff I mentioned. Its non hardening and is almost the exact stuff ford used when they did them or so I hear.

How much did he charge? Thats about 15 minutes of work.

I did both my front and back windows and used the 3m stuff about a year ago been working good.

You might need the trim removal tool if you dont have one yet.

I used a ruler to remove my trim I couldn't find my tool, believe it or not it worked just fine Where can I buy the stuff? I'm thinking about making a run over to kragan auto parts and see if they have it.

I believe he charged 120 for both front and back window, he installed the trim as well. The front one I know he did right, he layed out the foam pad thing, then caulked it with urethane all the way around and aligned the window nicely. the rear one though is what we might have gotten ripped off on I guess. Oh well we didn't know any better.

Ok so I will go and buy the 3M stuff you mentioned, so should I just fill in the gaps all the way around and just make sure it is in good or what?

thanks gun jam

Kragen wont have it (pretty sure)

I got mine at a auto paint store. Most auto paint stores should have it, any of them that list 3m in their ad should be a good bet.

They might have to order it but they can get it.

I guess I should have waited for your response, kragan didn't have it I just got back lol. The only things they had was fast acting window urethane and those strips that you lay down, kinda like what is used to seal the gas tank, only these were bigger.

I'll try a paint store or somewhere on monday I suppose, it's getting late now on a saturday and I'm sure it won't be open on a sunday.

Thanks again

One word of caution:

IF.....there are rust holes in the window channel where the weatherstrip sits that could be causing the water leak (or to leak worse)
if that is indeed the case the 3m sealant may not stop the leak. If it doesnt removing the weather strip is going to be a worse job due to the sticky mess...I still say try it anyhow (or ask the shop if they remember seeing any rust holes).

Take the tip of the 3m caulk can and force it down as far as you can into the seam and let it fill from the bottom up so there are no air pockets as you slowly move along.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice, there was a small pinhole in the channel but I already filled it with metal filler. Thats what I thought the problem was but turns out that was only a tiny bit of it. Now with this sealer it should be just fine.

I was thinking of just ordering it online, for like 7 bucks a tube. How many tubes do you think it will take to caulk the whole window? Each tube is 1/10 a gallon it says...
