Default Starting problem again - Help please

Well, thinking I got my Stang running somewhat "reliable", I go to put gas in, shut down the engine (after running for about 20mins)and try to start after fill up and it doesn't want to fire. After maybe about 3mins of trying, it starts to sound like it really wants to fire up but only does after I pump the gas pedal like crazy. If I shut it down and start it immediately, it'll fire up without pumping it. But if I let it sit for more than a few minutes, the problem reoccurs (happened again the same day). The second time it happened, I spent about 15mins trying to get it started. I could hear the gas "squirting" into the carb and I could smell it with the hood open, but I don't think it was flooded (well at least when the problem first started again).

Now, it willfire upfrom cold when I start it on the first try. I had a heat problem with the starter before, which I think I took care of, so I don't think it's that. But then again, I'm no expert. It runs fine once it starts, but it seems like it could be fuel related? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

it might have been flooded.

Next time it pulls that crap on you push the pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there and then attempt to start the car. this will pull lots of air in and if its flooded it will start pretty quickly (less than 10 seconds of cranking)

+1

"Pumping" the accelerator pedal will only add more fuel to already fuel soaked situation. Just hold it to the floor and crank it.

If your starter was overheating, it wouldn't be cranking.

Thanks guy, I'll try that next time it happens. Let me ask this, if I try to start it after it sits 10mins (without pumping the gas) and it doesn't want to fire, could it be possible that fuel is being dumped into the carb after the engine is off causing it to flood?

yes it could.

If you have weak needel springs I suppose a temp increase in the fuel line could up the pressure enough to force all the fuel from the line into the carb. If that was the case it should air out when you hold open the throttle and start up okay.

Is the fuel line touching anything after it comes out from the fender apron or where ever it enters the engine bay?

I'm not sure if the line is. I'll have to check that out.

Thanks again.

first of all check as Gun suggested. Wehn it's been standing for 15 mins try starting with throttle wide open.
It might help. But if your carb has been leaking inside your plugs might be wet holding off the car to start.
if you isolate it and wide open throttle works for starting, we can give further tips on what to try/do

Kalli, if the carb was leaking, is there any outward signs to tell if it was? Thanks

Perhaps

Fuel may leak out from the base of the carb and collect on the intake manifold (only in very serious flooding conditions probably not in your case)

If you remove the air cleaner right after you park the car and then tie the throttle open with a rope or put a brick on the gas pedal then look down the barrel of the carb you might see fuel start to puddle up in the bottom before running into the intake. It make take a few minutes before fuel begins to run into the carb so make frequent checks. (NOTE: pulling the throttle back should cause the accelerator pump to dump a quick shot into the carb. after that evaporates watch for any further signs of leakage.)
