Default Preventive Maintance ???

I am going to try to put on a new holly carb (575) and an intake this fall.....dont want to try it now-Car is running good and I want to enjoy it fro the summer weather.....Is there anything else I should do when I have the manifold off ?
I am probbaly going to replace the valve cover gaskets too....
I am not much of a mechanic but with the help of some friends I can get the job done.
The new carb has an electric choke...where should I get the hot feed from?

what would you guys do when the top of the engine is off ? Would like to get some input and get the necessary parts in advance-Thanks Scott

make sure that when you are putting the manifold and carb back on, all the holes are plugged up with something...i used tissue paper...you can use whatever. and as for when you leave the top of the engine off, same deal, make sure all the holes are plugged, and preferably store it inside the garage...or the best thing would be to have an air chamber! but that is kind of pointless for a 1 time thing

you are probably the only sane man on this forum :-)

1. as for plugging holes with tissue paper ... ah please use PROPER plugs for blocking the holes in the intake
if you buy from lets say summit, they'll suggest a set that might fit.
If you use something half-assed like ducktape or i don't know what ideas people come up with the engine might suck it in. VERY VERY bad idea.
2. you will have to get a gasket kit for the intake manifold. You;ll have two rubber strips for front and back of block.
Don't use them. They'll leak. Use a thick bed of silicone.
3. if you need to plug ports in the carb, there's nice little rubber plugs for putting on top that you can buy.
4. make sure to not forget to order carb gaskets and studs (if they're not with the carb)
5. it's time for a new air-filter. if you have the roundy base, go for K&N. they're really great and if you clean them every now and again it'll last for life. Get some oil specific for those filters unless anyone has other suggestions on what to use to oilm them.
6. make sure you hgave all linkage (throttle linkage). for automatic transmission you need the ford kickdown lever as well. Make sure the carb has that ion case you have auto trans
7. as for the electric choke hooked up to coil. It can work in cases, but it will run once you have ignition. The better solution is to hook it up to STA connector on alternator. This way the choke will run only when the engine is running. Another thing is that most coils run with 7.5V+ which is not enough for the choke. The Holley manual will suggest the same.
