Default Coupe to Convertable

I was wondering if annyone had made a coupe into a convertable? If so what do you need to do to make it work.

I had throught about trying it on a parts car I had,but it was to rusty so I didnot try it.

I was going to make a perminnet conv. (top always down)I was going to cover the hole between back seat and trunk with the conv boot.. What I found was this (67-68).
All windsheild are the same but you will need the conv mouldings and visors. you can get conv 1/4 panels and inter door panels. I could not find NEW mouldings for the 1/4s around the boot area. the back of the back set is different.
Conv have stronger rocker panels I was going to stiffen the frame with sub frame connectors. If you don't do something here the car will sag and the doors will not open.

Thats my $.02

I would like to here more ideas cause I still might try it someday.......

dont do it, all you will do is wreck a nice Coupe.
there were a lot of differences between the conv. and coupes, the convertibles had torque boxes, stronger rocker panels, differnt inner fenders, etc. in the end you will probably spend more money than it would cost to sell the coupe and buy a convertible, and it wont look as good.

not to say it cant be done good but the odds are against you.

my $0.03

You'll need more money and time than it will take to find and buy a decent convert and fix it.

I agree with Nabster, I think when the time comes for another stang, I'll look for a fixable vert instead of building one.

We did my buddies about 20 years ago abck when we were in high school. There were no "kits" so we got parts fromk salvage yards and back then parts were cheap and easy to find.
heres a bad pic of it.The parts list was less then $1,000back then

My neighbor is in the process now and has already spent about $7000 on nos used parts(top, glass, mouldings, seats) He still need the subframes, interior and small parts.

To me its not a smart way to do things when i found a very clean 65 convertible, with new top/paint and running for $12,000.

Its easier and cheaper to sell your car and buy a convertible for 2 reasons. One your gonna need a convertible for parts might as well fix it.And your vin would show its a coupe you can't get the convertibles price if you sold it.
