Why do you need a new distributor? There's nothing really wrong with a recurved stock unit with an electronic upgrade (or, as has been pointed out in a recent post, a Summit CDI box).

I have an MSD ready-to-run distributor on my 331. It was expensive, but I wanted the advance adjustability and the ability to easily add a box later (the box plugs right into the distributor).

the stock distributer i have is old and i wanted a fresh look and i didnt know you can get an electronic upgrade can you tell me what the advantage of staying with the stock distributer is and can you show me some kits that are out there?
One reason i wanted to buy a compl;ete pertronix ignition is because i see alot of you mustang owners swapping out to a MSD or Pertronix distributer/ignition

Pick a cap size. Yeah, it costs, but way more accurate ignition timing and 10x easier to mess with.

That Crane has no weights or springs in it that need servicing or adjusting. It has a microprocessor with pre programmed "mechanical" and vacuum advance curves. Tuning the timing curve is litteraly as simple as turning a dial on the distributor. That and a good ignition box with the right plugs will improve power and mileage, the car will start easier and run better in foul weather. Plus if you ever plan on building performance you will need a high energy ignition system.

msd or crane are the best

like starfury, i have the RTR pro bullit msd one. it came with a vaccuum canister but i used the kit that comes with it and replaced it with the lockout plate so i dont have the ugly canister hangin off the side of my distributor.

That Crane unit just has a port sticking otu for vacuum advance. It actually uses a MAP type sensor for vacuum advance control.

That Crane unit is nice, but I still don't think you need anything like that if you've got a functioning original distributor, and you don't need to fork out that much money. Recurving the stock distributor and adding either a Pertronix and 40kV coil or aCDI box will get you reliability and restore any performance lost from an improper advance curve. Big shiny/bright ignition components aren't going to give you more power.
