Default new dizzy

well i finally got the new afr's and stealth intake, and roller rocker/lifters. the engine looks great. runs better than before, but i don't think the timing is right. waiting to use a friends timing light. but i know its off. i can get it to run smooth at idle but it misses as i rev it up. then i set it at 3k and it won't idle or crank. it currently has the crane hi-6 with 40k coil and new plugs and wires. (plugs are gapped at .045 ) it has a mallory unilite dizzy. i've heard they aren't very good. i need to have a reliable car. so i might get a new dizzy. i was wondering if anyone has tried the Pro-Curve from crane. very expensive but i like how i will be able to customize the advance. if so let me know how you like it or are there any other options. besides the msd e-curve.thanks.

My Pro curve is on backorder right now, but the Uni-lite is a good dizzy. My guess is something isn't set correctly, or the timing light is off. Some timing lights don't like to work well with CD ignition boxes either. The total added advance might be too short, so when you set it at 3k for total timing, initial is too advanced. What timing are you running in it? With a good head like an AFR you shouldn't need more than 28-33 total timing if the engine is setup right.

you need to check your total advance curve!! shouldn't be more than 36 btdcfor an optimal setting

dont mean to jack this thread but i dont know the basics of timing advance. i just got my 289 running after a rebuild and i have a mechanical advance dizzy. havent tryed to mess with it yet but im on the verge. first i need to get a new balance with timing marks. there are currently none.

Can someone explain how the advance works?

if it is advanced to much will it cause it to run hotter. i ran it a bit after the new top end and it ran cool. i statred messing w/ timing and it ran hotter after that.

So what is the setup with an MSD on a 351c? I installed the distro last year and the Tach wouldnt work so MSD sent me another wire without instructions and I just got back into the car.

Thanks
