Default New to forums - 65 2+2

New to this forum - currently a member of several others.

My current project is a '65 2+2 that I am finishing up after 4 long years of part time restoration. The project is my personal training plan for learning the ins and outs of car work and restoration. My wife's daily driver is a 2003 GT convertible. It is bone stock now - but I want to lower it and do some mild engine mods this year - as soon as I can get my '65 off the lift and back on the road.

I am currenlty planning my engine build for my '65 and could use some help and advice - this is breaking new ground for me. I have a ford motorsports short block and I am researching aftermarket aluminum heads at the moment. The desire is to have a streetable 300 - 350 hp, with a carb.

Take a look -

Hi there!

Welcome to the forums.

I'm not a master either, but anything I find out along the way I'll be posting in here. There are many knowledgeable people on here from around the world. You may not have answers right away, but if you are specific enough they will come.

Your question is very large and could go in thousands of directions, depending on what you want from the car and of course, your budget.

Which shortblock and how much displacement?

My short block is the M6009 b50 - standard 302 replacement shortblock from Ford Racing. My intent is to build a not-so complicated engine (no stroker) as it is my 1st engine buildup. My tentative plans are for either the Edelbrock or Ford GT40 aluminum heads. I will ask more pointed questions as I get closer to a purchase.

Awesome! Keep checking back in to the forums, someone may have an answer you are looking for in another post. I wish I could get some Aluminum heads, but they are out of the budget for this year. I may be going with a .040 bored 302 that my friend says he can get from where he works. We'll see

First off [sm=welcomesign.gif] to the forum.

I like your choise in cars and was wondering how you mounted the the shelby side scoops. I have the same ones but no one could tell me how they were mounted.

My 65 also has the hood, but I opted for the fiberglas trunk lid with spoiler (mustangs plus) and the front lower spoiler with bumper. When I am done, it will be red with black stripes. Yours looks sweet!!![sm=drooldude.gif]

Good luck and see you around the forum. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]Cheers

The scoops are held in place by rivets. I had to shop for a while to find scoops that had a lip matching the body contours. I bought these and the hood from the Mustang Ranch out in California. Both were perfect fits with little prep work before paint.

Thanks for looking - any photos of your car?

No pictures yet that are presentable. The car is on jack stands right now with hood, trunk lid and wheels off. In the process of replacing the gas tank and fuel lines, relocating the battery to the trunk, installing front power disk breaks and lines, and exhaust. Still have to add the side scoops and front valance.

Your car looks to be a little further along than mine is. After I reassemble all that, then I find a shop to do the paint work. I am hoping to be done before summer is over. [sm=icon_guiness.gif]Cheers

Have you considered Edelbrock heads? The performer is advertised to get you 300+ hp, and the Victor Jr. is advertised to get you 500+ hp.

I agree - the 65/66 fastbacks are one of the most original and stylistic designs that Ford has ever produced. I don't like the 67 - up fastbacks - they share the big Torino and Galaxie fastback roofline and it is not as pleasant as the early cars. But to each his own.... I have the car I have wanted since I was about 5 - but I am still looking for a good convertible as well.
