Default Question on sound deadener material

I want to cover the floor of my convertable with sound deadener material. I have seen in some old posts here that some people went to like home depot or lowes and bought some sticky material like what dynomat is, but i can not find it! Does anyone know what this stuff is called or where I can get it. I really just want some light sound deadening, and it was alot cheaper then these sound deadening mat kits! Thanks

The stuff you buy at the local hardware store (lowes & home depot) is called Ice&Water Shield. Its designed to be placed in valleys on a house roof and shingles applied over it. I know a few people who have used it and I can say it does help... a bit. The problem with it is it's simply too thin.. aside from the fact its not sound deadener but a water shield.

If your looking to save money then buy a product like FatMat, spend the 100.00 and do it right. I don't suggest using the Ice&Water Shield product.

I used a cheap product called eDead. It's kinda like the Home depot stuff. It runs $1/sq foot

Honestly If you search for sound deadner testing you might come up with a website that tested all the different ones. SecondSkin came out on top, best quality, best pricing, not the cheapest of them all but works a lot better. secondskinaudio.com damplifier or damplifier pro and if you want it quiet inside throw some kind of coat liner first, then damplifier, then a luxury liner foam.

edead is the way to go. Go with the thick version and you will do you entire car of less then $100 and it works. Its the same thing as secondskin and much cheaper. They also have a paint you can spray in hard to reach areas.

+1 to the eDead it worked great for me. the home depot stuff is peel and seal and it is okay I've heard but nothing to brag about except the price. You can't do the whole car for a $100 with the eDead, at leaset it cost me more, around 200 something. But then again I ordered 140 sq feet i believe, I did the whole firewall, floors, roof (twice), inside the doors, and the trunk floor and gas tank. I have maybe 20 sq feet left, but let me tell you that stuff worked great, you can hardly hear the road or anything. I can actually have a conversation in my car with the windows down at normal talking level, and I have glasspacks! My sound system I just put in sounds great as well.

If you are just doing some light deadening, then you might as well go with the elemental designs eDead because it will end up being not much more money and you will get better results. Just do like the floor and trunk for a basic one, but I would definitely recommend the roof, wheel wells, and firewall if you can. It's up to you!

Ya I think the edead is a good deal! I dont have a roof becasue its a convertable but I do plan on doing the firewall, floors, wheelhouses and everything i can get it on. It seems like a good deal for the money!

If I might add a question to the original question...

About how many Sq feet do you need to cover your typical '66 Mustang coupe? Just the floors and fire wall for the time being.
