5.0 Conversion into a 73
Found out this interesting bit this weekend. A 5.0 and t5 from a 94-94 mustang fits perfectly in a 71-73 mustang. I was originally going to put this 5.0/t5 drivetrain into my 66 but ran into other complications. I know I was going to have to change the bellhousing and input shaft due to the 95 being an inch longer. But with me not needing it anymore my friend threw it into a 73 6 cyl mustang. After changing the motor mounts to a Windsor mount everything lined up perfectly. The shifter came right up where the existing shifter hole was with absolutely no cutting or any other modification needed. The only problem is the air intake, the stock intake runs into the passenger shock tower but we believe that can easily be fixed by throwing on any CAI.
Just throwing this info out there. I haven't heard of or seen a modern 5.0 swap into a 71-73 before.

For the 65-68's I know that the shifter position would require you to cut about an inch out because the trans in the 94-95 is an inch longer than the 87-93 mustang. From what I understood was that yes the floor pan was mainly the same up until the II's but there were minor modifications made with each generation. Slight differences between shifter holes and other minor adjustments.
The 67-68's you had to do a slight modification and cut some of the shifter hole out on the side to do a t5 conversion was what I was explained. Also I was explained that a 94-95 drivetrain was like the plague when doing a conversion to a 65-68 due to the cutting I would have to do due to the extra inch or do the bellhousing and input shaft switch.
I don't know, I don't think I'm quite understanding your question.

Cutting the floor pan for the shifter may or may not be required. It all depends on the shifter you use, the manufacturing tolerances, and if your car has had any past accidents or body "tweaks".
My T5 shifter location came out exactly in the existing hole. I didn't have to cut anything.

My friend just went out and bought the generic 5.0 mounts and it bolted right up.
The 6 cyl was a 250 I believe. Its just hanging out with the tranny still attached in his garage.
And James general speaking from common experiences from people who did this swap with the 65-66 I understand a 87-93 t5 will come perfect through your original shifter hole, on a 67-68 you have to do a minor modification to the side of the shifter hole for clearance. But the 94-95 t5 is an inch longer, with the 65-66 you would have to cut some room in the back of the shifter hole for the transmission, the 67-68 back and to the side a little. But apparently the 71-73 shifter sits a little farther back than the previous generations. So the 94-95 drivetrain fits perfectly with it being an inch or so longer.
I don't know if people commonly did this with the 69-70 because most swaps seem to be for big blocks. Those cars and up accommodate big displacement engines far better.
