Default Carpet underlayment

OK, so as I've begun to gut the inside of my '66 Coupe and replace some floor pans, I pulled the carpet and there is all of this black rubbery tar stuff which I am assuming in an underlayment of some type. Short of having it media blasted what would be the best way to get this stuff out so I can really see what is underneath it? All I can come up with is a heat gun and lots of scraping! Thanks for the help!

Yup.. a heat gun and a scraper works fine. It heats up and comes off fairly easily. After you have it all up take a rag and some lacquer thinner to get the rest off. Didn't have any in our stang but had to do this in my fathers AMC.
