How to identify whether it is a "REAL" GT ?
Look for the "body buck tag". It will list options to be put on the car. Guess they were put in different locations thru the years. Some on the top edge of fenders, some on the core support..near the right? headlight? It's a credit card size piece of sheet metal looking thingy.
for the 66 GT handling package the car must have a A-code 289 4V, the grille is the same as a 65 GT with the blacked out screen and fog lights, and it should have a GT badge and individually lettered m u s t a n g in a stripe on the doors, im sure there is more but is 2:05 in the morning and im not gonna look anymore up hope it helps
look for a hole in the radiator support for the fog light wiring. and stick your finger through the hole in the subframe right next to the rear leaf spring mount, there should be a plate which is proof it had dual exhaust, which ALL gts did.
but just cause it has those 2 doesnt mean its a gt, theyre only REALLY good clues. the real way is to check the vin. theres 3 stamped on the inner fender aprons.

The only way you can really tell it's an actual GT is if you have the window sticker. But if it has all of the things listed above, especially if the holes in the radiator support are punched not drilled and if it has that hole in the subframe then you can be pretty sure it's a real GT car.
The VIN doesn't tell you whether or not it's a GT. 67-73 models can get a Marti report, but the 65-66 documentation has been lost, so you need to stick with physical verification procedures.

Only the Metuchen plant used buck/body tags in 66. The others started using them in 68. I am pretty sure they did not notate the GT package on the plate until 68. Marti may have some records to go by, but I do not think the body tag is going to help you.
