Ignition timing help
I have a 65 fastback with a 289 and auto trans. I have been having a stutter problem when I first step on the gas. I have a new holley 600 carb with elec choke, unilite dist, new coil, new filters both in line and on the pump.
My next step is to adjust the timing. Can anyone tell me what timing should be set at? I don't believe any other modifications have been done to the motor.
I want to make sure the timing is correct before I start putting money into changing fuel pumps and everything else.
Thanks.

Haynes book shows 8deg BTDC. There is a lot of information (opinions) out there suggesting factory settings are a bit conservative. Several websites suggest advancing the timing until you get pinging on WAO accelleration, then taking it back until the pining stops.
I'm having the same problem you described. New vacuum advance unit is going on tonight.

hiya ..
if you still have points (contact breakers) then make sure to adjust/replace them first
once this is done set to 8degrees at idle. with vacuum disconnected at distributor side and the hose plugged
once set slowly rev the engine to see if the mechanical advance is working
then see the post about vacuum canister (last 3 days) from fishkg to check on the vacuum.

same as before, just leave out the last step (testing the canister).
make sure all the ports in the carb are plugged, so the carb is pulling air nowhere but the top.
note:
electronic has nothing to do with vacuum. no vacuum is not a good idea for street driven application. see my other post from today for more detail
