Default Quick help please! Engine/trans advice

I'm building a '72 Mach 1 and decided to get rid of the 302 and the auto trans that came with the car. I found a deal on Craig's List and will drive down and buy it tomorrow if it will all fit. They are parting out a '96 F250. I'm told it has a good running 351W and a 5-speed in it. It's still installed so I can hear it run. My question is will this all fit in my car? From everything I've read on this forum I'm pretty sure the engine will fit without a problem. What issues will I have with the transmission or should I just buy the engine only? My other question is that the engine is EFI. I can take the engine, harness, computer, etc...anything I need for $300. What do you guys think? If I buy the engine should I try to keep it EFI or should I switch it over to a carb? Thanks alot in advance for the help!!! I'm planning on driving down first thing in the AM.

I would take it all, efi is more efficent than carb and less tempermental once it's set.

Thanks for the quick reply! It's much appreciated. I'll definately pick up the motor. What do you think about the '96 5-speed tranny? Will it fit in my '72? The owner of the truck says it won't but I trust the opinion of the guys here over this guy that might not know anything about Mustangs. My car originally came with the 3-speed manual. Thanks again!

I have a 351W that I bolted up, after some struggles. I"m not sure on the tranny though, I'm assuming a different mount set up, and shifter are in store.

tranny will be problematic for you, but a windsor can mate a c4 just fine, and they are relatively cheap. keep in mind if you're going to EFI its not just a drop in and go scenario. plenty of guys here have gone to EFI. they're the ones to talk to on that.

Sounds good. Thanks. I'm going to pass on the trans but I'll go pick up the engine this morning. I'll still go out and look for a 4-speed or 5-speed. The car originally came with a 3-speed so the clutch pedal is there and I'd prefer keeping a manual trans. They gave me a 302 and a C4 with the car but I just posted them both for sale on Craig's List.

Well, I got the engine today. He started it up for us. I ran great. No smoke, no knock. Great running motor. I took the advice and left the transmission. I took all of the EFI stuff but we've decided to just buy a cam, intake and carb instead of trying to mess with the fuel injection issues. I'll keep it for a little while in case I change my mind. It will most likely get put up for sale though. Now, my next question is what time frame should I be looking for when it comes to a 5-speed? Which years will fit into the '72 with the least amount of trouble and bolt up to a '96 351W? I'll continue searching old threads to try and find the answer myself. Thanks again for all the help!

Sorry, coming in late here,
If the 5-speed is still available, i would concider it if it's a Tremec or T-5.
I had a Tremec TKO 500 put in my 71 with a 351c. I had a choice btw the T-5 and TKO and chose the TKO because the 351C torque specs are more than the T-5 is rated for. The big issues were finding a clutch peddle (you already have) and a longer drive shaft was needed. Everything else bolts up without cutting. Not sure why Waffles says it would be "problematic", maybe he could shed light on that comment.

Thanks for the reply! The trans might still be available. It's about a 1 hour drive away so not too bad. When I decided to leave the trans I didn't ask any questions about it. Yes, I have the clutch pedal so that's good. I also have two driveshafts in different lengths. I'm not sure what they came out of but I got them both when I bought the car. I'll shoot the truck owner an email and ask some questions about that F250 transmission.

I found his ad for the transmission. He described it as "ZF-47 transmission. The model number is S5-47". I've never heard of this model. What is it and will it work? Thanks again!
