Default how do you upgrade distributor

i need a new distributor and ignition system i was wondering if anybody could detail what parts i need for a stock 302 with only a performance intake and exhaust and a 500 carb and how to go about doing it. I need mostly to know what is compatible and reliable. Then beyond that i need to know how to upgrade a distributor while keeping my timing right.

theres lots of ways, you can swap in a rebuilt duraspark from your local auto parts, you will also need the blue strain module, you can do a pertronix or accel conversion to your points dist, procomp makes some inexpensive ready to run distributors which you just hook up two wires and go, the ignition modules are built in, they have regular and LG cap HEI style, as the price goes up MSD,ACCEL and others make ready to run type dists, performance distributors makes one of the best, the procomp is a copy of it made in China, the quality is pretty good but you want it recurved for better performance as you would with most of them. The procomp and the duraspark are about the same price but duraspark is usa made and factory issue, you can actually use a ford,GM HEI or chrysler module with the duraspark just wire it correctly, you can also use any aftermarket ignition like the msd 6a, accel 300+,mallory hi fire, summit or any hipo ignition that has a trigger in place of the module, you also want a good electronic coil.

An advance timing light does wonders in this situation. I've got a 66 coupe, 289. Started with a stock dizzy. Added a pertronix ignition and coil. Dis-assembled the dizzy, recurved it, and installed an adj vacuum adv. The best I could get was 38 degrees by 3000 RPM. Other then the pertronix, coil, and vacuum, springs, timing tape, the rest was labor. There are multiple links, like mustang monthly tech that shows how to recurve a stock 66 dizzy. This way you don't have to go and swap parts, and chase down pieces, and try to remember it all later. it was about $125 for everything, and you end up with a breakerless perf dizzy. I prefer MSD, but a 6A and dizzy are probably $500. And I don't need a high end unit for my current application. Ya work with what you got. I did my homework, and learned alot. Well worth it.
