Default Breather cap question

Just a general question about a breather cap on the valve cover.

The right cover has a PCV valve which is routed to the base of the carburetor. The left cover has a breather cap with a port that is not hooked to anything. I've been told that this port should be routed to the air cleaner. Can anyone verify this?

It can be routed to the air cleaner. That is the purpose of the port from 1968 on, however, you can simply use a standard breather and allow it to vent to the atmosphere.

Either way is fine, I have mine routed to the air cleaner because the little tube that sticks out the front looks funny without anything on it.

yah. the breather is for crank case ventilation. Either use a breather with a filter and release to atmostphere or route it to the aircleaner if you have that hookup, so the engine will burn it .. which would be a bit more environmental friendly (a word seldom used on such cars) ...

Um....not to be picky or anything but, I think youo guys are looking at this backwards. The reason that it is run to the air cleaner (or thru a filtered cap) is so that "clean" air enters the engine. It is sucked out thru the PCV and then burned.

Thanks for the information.

I drilled the base of the aftermarket air cleaner and installed a hook-up with a filter. Since the new fitting is inside the air filter, anything coming from the breather cap will still get filtered before getting to the carb.

I haven't driven it much since then, but it does seem to have cut down on the fluid that would build up in one of the indentations on the intake manifold behind the carb. I thought may have been fuel coming from a bad carb/spacer gasket, but now I'm thinking it was oil coming from the PCV hose fitting.
