Default How much would you charge?

Ok, so talking to a guy who wants his 1968 Firebird painted. It's a straight car, just needs to be scuffed up and sprayed. The only PITA that I can find is the fact that I'm going to have to take the hood, fenders, doors, and trunk lid off to spray it. He's going from a Canary yellow to a medium metalic blue. So all the jams and everything are going to have to be cut in.

Like I said, how much would you charge, and how much would you charge up front? He's going to pay for all the supplies ahead of time.

for my 70 challenger, i paid $3000 and i had it painted the same color. but i guess it depends on what type of job you want. is it show quality paint or just paint for a everyday driver.

If you don't paint it. Who will? Ask a shop he would likely go to if you didn't do it and get a ballpark estimate. Charge that, assuming you will do at least as good a job.

I say, convince him to keep it canary and add blue pin or racing stripes, if he's really married to the blue. Charge accordingly.

See he wants something more near show quality. But the problem is there are shops putting out poor quality paint jobs for a cool 1k. I haven't determined if he's the sort of person that thinks they will do a better job or not. And is 3k from a shop or someone like me who just knows WTF they are doing?

if you can paint then take it on, if you cannt then dont.

also keep in mind if you spray any panel at a different speed, further from the substrate, different air pressure different day etc the color will be different

I'm not worried about painting it, I went to school and did it for two years, so I'm not worried about painting it. It's not long in in terms of time, but I was the painter at a shop. Only problem is I never did the estimates nor paid attention to anything but the work order. I know alot of you have paid to have your cars painted and I'm looking to see how much you guys had paid because I'm going to go tell him my price today.

Paint jobs can range from $200 to $5000 in commercial paint shops and more. In general, to get a factory-like job with decent acrylic paint and a clearcoat, with the trunk and removed and the door jams done it would be fine to charge him $1000.

If you think he'll try to talk that down, start by telling him you will do a job that people pay $1500 for, but you'll only charge him $1200. If you come down to $1000 after that, he'll feel like he got a steal.

Once again, make a couple of calls LOCALLY to shops in your area and ask for a quote. That's the best way to judge since that's what he would likely do.

Good luck. BTW, Nice car. I'll be happy to shrink your sig pic if you want. My scroll wheel finger is getting a callus, lol.

Haha, sorry about the picture Carlos, just put it up today... and yeah it's huge and... yeah it needs shrunk. Umm about the paint though. I was thinking about telling him 1k to 1.5k depending on how I feel. Probably 1k and he pays for all the materials.

I called a few shops around here, and tried to give them a detailed description of everything that would need done and nobody could give me an answer, they all say their base paint job starts at 1500.
