Default Heater Box Question

Hi all,

Getting my 73 coupe back together. It's all painted and looks great.

I had previously pulled the heater / AC box out before the sand blasting.

I put it all back in yesterday, but noticed something odd. It maybe nothing and the way it is suppposed to work, but I don't recall exactly how much the heater control lever on the box is allowed to move. I know that it doesn't move all that much, but now that it is all back together I'm paranoid that I'll have to pull that darn thing back out. But, I'd rather do it now than after the carpet is installed.

So, the question is, for those of you that have a 71 thru 73 mustang with air, how far does the heater control arm on your box move (how far does the end of the control arm rotate)?

Mine looks like it will move about 1 inch. But the control gizmo on the dash control looks like it can move up to 2 inches. I think that the range of motion of the dach control is greater than the box, but again, I don't remember. I took the box out in March, and now I don't remember how it used to work exactly.

Am I ok?

John

I don't suppose anyone could measure the distance the heat selector actually moves the heater box lever on a 71 to 73 with AC. Would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

I can check it out this weekend for you.

Did you connect it and see if the lever moves correctly?

No, the interior is mostly removed from the car. I'm putting it all back in, but, I'm worried about the heater box.

I have an AC heater box sitting in my shop. It only moves about an inch. I know the contol lever on my black one doesn't move all the way over to heat, but it works fine.

I would say you are fine to put it back together.

Well, you are going to need to adjust it when you put in in anyways...so, move it all the way to one side and put the cable on, then make sure you get the full motion of the door. It's mostly a trial and error type thing.

Thanks all. Looking at it, I can't see how it would move more than an inch without leaving a little room for that clamp and some jacket of the cable in the pinch. So, thanks for verifying.

I'm going to seal it up with aluminum duct tape. Says that it is recommended for automotive use.
