Cool Boss 302

I just found a Boss 302 short block for around $1500.00 on cjponyparts.com. Does anyone have any idea w/ the right accessories what kind of hp/torque rate I would be looking at. It will be going in a '65 coupe.
Thanks, ~Quin

less than if you invested that 1500$ into modern heads :P

the block has 4 bolt main and screw in freeze plugs they do nothing to increase power.

take a regular 289/302 block add a stud girdle you get the same strength

If you check around, you will fine that the Boss 302 is much stronger (4-bolt). They will spin 8k and stay together if well balanced and good internals. Its in the higher RPM's where they make their power. My guess is that 350 is about the norm with stock heads in the day. And now if you do a little work, it will easily breach the 400-450 Hp mark. In race form, the "Trans Am" engines made around 600 (those blocks were a little different though). I will say for the money (they want), I would start with a new R-302 block and build on it.

Make sure it's really a Boss block. And has the boss rods. I'd change the pistons to go with a set of inline valves and use a set of aftermarket akuminum heads. Boss 302 heads arent cheap.

dont do it. headers will be hard to get in that car with a boss 302 head.just spend wisely on a regular 302 based motor like they said. imo in the end you'll happier with the same cubes and less $

There's no reason to buy a real Boss302 block unless you have an original Boss302 car. As has been previously stated, it's cheaper and easier to build up a non-Boss block with modern components to make similar power. Only the guys that have original cars missing the engine should be willing to pay that kind of money for that block.

The boss 302 block, rods and crank are alot stronger than a standard 302. 4 bolt main caps, 3/8in rod bolts and a steel crank. Screw in freeze plugs too. Considering that aftermarket 4 bolt blocks go for more than that, it's a pretty good deal. And it wont break at 500HP ;-)

I wouldnt go for it. Just use a normal 302 block and go from there. It will be cheaper and the 302 can handle most anything that you would be aiming for, assuming you put in hi-po main caps
