Guys,
I have a question regarding replacement of my quarter panels skins. I pulled the last of the bondo off what I thought was the good side of the car (passenger) and found that the previous owner had put a quarter panel skin on and set it about 3/8" higher than it should have been. He partially filled the C scoop in with bondo on both the panel and door, and sanded on the bondo until he had formed his own contour lines. My question is; do the contour lines on the knock-off body panels match closely to the original body contours? If I buy a knock off quarter skin, will the C scoop lines match up with what is on the original car door as far as heighth and width? The doors and roof are the only exterior sheet metal that I am not replacing, and I want to make sure all of the aftermarket body parts will line up correctly.

repop parts are decent quality, you can even spend a little extra to get ford stamping repops

 

I used the repop ford stamped drivers quarter and it came out quite well. The biggest issue was the top contour in the C scope extended way too much into the door jam for some reason. The bottom contour was fine. I wound up having to cut a number of slices on the lip that folds into the door jam and carefully rework the panel. Took some time but it came out nicely and the door line matches evenly from top of the door to bottom now.

 

I used repop quarters, not Ford tooled, and they were really close to the original. I would imagine the Ford ones would be even better. I did have somewhat of the same issue with the top of the "c" scoop. In the end though the lines all matched up really well. This is a pic of it just tacked in place.

 

Does the repop quarter skin actually have a lip that goes into the door jam? I'm thinking of replacing one of my quarters which has a bit more bondo than I'd like.

 

Yes, there is a lip that wraps around into the door jam... same as the original.

Did you use a torch to remove the factory applied lead from the pillar/quarter panel joint? Will you use lead to fill it again, or a plastic filler? I am a little leery about doing a full quarter replacement because of that very joint
It does match up nicely though, so I believe I will be just fine keeping things lined up. Thanks for posting the picture!!!!!!

When you say the top C scoop contour extended into the door jamb, do you mean towards the door (ie no gap between door and quarter) or did it extend towards the car interior? I guess with a cutoff wheel and a welder I can make about anything fit eh?!

 

I have a similar problem. are the QP skins decent quality for a 71-73 fastback? I have removed the lead from the quarter seam and am wondering if a filler like Metal 2 metal will be able to hold up to the stresses of that seam. What do you guys think?

 

yes metal to metal will be great for that job in fact it has greater corrosion resistance over traditional filler and is easier to use
