WADR - By recomminding such things as pointless ignition, which is always a good, practical mod, you are sending her down the path of throwing money at the problem rather than TROUBLESHOOTING the problem.

She has already begun her own troubleshooting by determining that the accelerator pump is apparantly working correctly.

She also is taking steps toward the second troubleshooting step in checking ignition timing. If the second step doesn't fix the problem, she will log in again with the results and we can help her with the next step.

Throwing parts(money) at a problem is never smart troubleshooting. In most of those cases you will be money and aggravation ahead by spending a few dollars for someone knowledgable to properly troubleshoot the problem.

She took the correct step by asking some questions so that she can try to troubleshoot it on her own. That's commendable. We will continue to help her as best we can. That said, let's try not to suggest $200 wild stabs at the problem.

Power valve malfunctioning? That's the other enrichment for part throttle acceleration, and the accelerator pump is apparently OK.

Where did the carb cleaner get sprayed to at least get the backfiring to stop?

Really long shot - are the carb hold-down bolts snug and is the gasket good?

It's likely to be a timing issue since it's otherwise fine while in 3rd and 4th gear. While you wait for your Ex to come over to check the timing, I'd say spend the $5 and change the fuel filter and test drive it. If it is still hesitating and backfiring, then check the timing.

I'd recommend to anyone to install a Pertronix Ignition. I believe even a non mechanic can install it, so it should only cost you about $60 plus tax.
