Default leaf springs ... again

Hi all,

didn't want to steal the other thread.

when I changed from my old rear to the new one I changed the shocks in back to "gas-a-just". Although I'm happy with them I have a problem that I can't drive with anyone in back. The car is just sagging down. I wondered why I didn't have the problem before I changed and the explanation to that is that my PO put "helper springs" in. Basically shocks that have a coild spring wrapped around them. Unfortunately no picture.
Don't know if I still have them, but I belive the only (proper) way to fix this is to get new leaf springs.

Any other ideas? where should I buy them
Tad: you mention you have 4.5 leafs. where did you get them? couldn't locate them on NPD catalogue.

Got my 4.5 leafs from Mustangs Unlimited if I remember correctly. Also bought the Edelbrock PERFORMER IAS shocks for the rear. Cant say what they ride like until later next year though.

car is already low at back. But I'm convinced that the springs in back are useless (sagged) and I have all my money on they were 1964 original 6cyl ...

If your leaf springas are more than 15 years old, they are shot. Springs just don't last that long. Buy a new set. Passenges in back can make a car sit a little lower, but it shouldn't make the car sag unless the leafs are done. When you take them off and put them next to a new set, you will see haow flat they are.

Springs can be reshaped. This is usually done with ancient cars where there's no replacement. I wouldn't normally recommend this for a Mustang, since new ones are cheap and plentiful, but if shipping costs are very high for new springs to Ireland, you should check out reshaping as an option.

Also, any leaf spring from any car with the same measurments will work. You might save some money getting springs locally from another car.

If your car still sags with new springs, and your passengers refuse to diet, you can put stiffer shocks in the back like air shocks too.

Good luck.

thanks carlos. I'll look into the other car with same springs option. I'm quite sure the springs are flat (old). as said I wouln't be suprised if they were 40 years old as well

Yup thats the one. Only difference is I went with the Standard Eye for the stock ride height.

I love the way it's low at the moment, but a higher **** on the car might look nice as well

Did you change out the front shocks at the same time? If not you should get those front shocks and springs replaced as well. If you go with the Std eye remember that it'll take a few weeks/month for them to correctly drop. Always high when first installed.

Curious...could coil over struts be installed? I don't know much about them.

Struts, no. Shocks....yes, but it's a very bad idea on Mustangs. The upper shock mounting points are not reinforced, they're just a thin piece of sheet metal. Trying to put any amount of the car's full weight on them is likely to push the shock right through the mount.

Kalli, I got 4.5 leaf mid-eye springs from Mustangs Plus because I couldn't find them anywhere else (MU's website isn't the easiest to navigate), and because I happened to be in Stockton to pick them up around that time. I absolutely love them. They're firm, but not too firm, partially thanks to the Edelbrock IAS shocks I switched over to. With my old gas-a-just shocks, I think they might have been a little too stiff.

If you're carrying some heavy passengers in the rear fairly often, I'd probably recommend 4.5 leaf standard eye springs. Pretty much anything will be better than your worn out 6cyl springs.
