old gas disposal?
I'm draining the gas tank in my '67in preparation for a new tank/fuel sender. There is alot of gas! So far I have one 5 gal tank full. This gas is 18 years old, and full of the crud from the bottom of the car's tank as well. Auto parts stores will not take it. What do I do with this much OLD gas? I think there may be 5 more gals or more to go (I only have one 5 gal tank to siphon it into) Any ideas?
I read online at several states environmental sites, and maybe at EPA to do the following:
Buy a kiddie pool (Crappy plastic ones about 4 ft in diameter)
buy a ton a the VERY bottom of the line cat litter (to be cheaper)
Put litter in pool. (I did about 5 inches deep). Dump the gas into the litter, trying to poor it evenly all around. Make sure you do this AWAY from your house, as it will stink and probably be flammable for a little while. Leave it there for a couple days, occasionally stirring the litter with a shovel. Again, it will stink a lot at first. When completely dry, just throw away the litter. (and the pool). Again, do not do this close to your house, and check local regs, but it worked for me. (also, keep pets away, wouldnt want your cat or dog to eat this)
I tried to get my local fire dpt to take mine to start a practice fire, the guy laughed and said "As much as we enjoy blowing things up and burning stuff, I can't accept it."

PS - I did this with about 6 gallons of 20 year old gas from a 79 RX-7 (my dads, one owner, mint , 50k miles). The gas was awful. Almost a syrup/apple juice color. If you have more than 6 gallons, you may want to do half at a time.
PS2 - Also check with local recycling companies and disposal companies.
PS3 - Buy a Wii! (bad joke for any fellow under 30 types here

you could always put it in a steel bucket like a pant can do about 1/2 gallon at a time. fill the can half way and throw a match onto it (not a real big deal)
You can use a long section of about 2" steel pipe with a 90 Degree fitting on the end place the pipe so the 90 degree fitting faces into the bucket of gas and use a leaf blower on low setting to run air up the pipe and onto the fire so it burns very clean an does not make smoke. This does take a bit of time but is the cleanest way to get rid of it.
You could try to let it evaporate too.

Upon further research I found out that my local dump will take it for free and dispose of it. It's only about 15 minutes away. It might take a couple of trips, but it beats playing with fire!
We have a local "recycle center" that takes that sort of thing.
When we bought our house last December the jerk that used to own the house left the garage in a state that it looked like I had purchased a foreclosure. I had to have 800-GOT Junk out to haul off literally a truck load of their crap.
One thing the Got Junk folks wouldn't take were several unidentified containers of various chemicals the guy left. One was about a half full five gallon can of used motor oil. Later when I replaced my gas tank I filled up the rest of the five gallon can with old gas and took it to the recycle center....they didn't even charge me anything for the gas / oil. They did charge me $10 however to dispose of the old gas tank.
