Default 351 Windsor Engine

Hi all i had another account but it got deleted. anyway i got some money and a free engine in good shape so i wanna put it in my 67 coupe. i have a 289 right now and i wanna preserve it and i was given a 1986 351W HO so i know the 351 will fit with slight exhaust mod. but my question is what about my accessory brackets for my power steering and alternator and A/C. Will the swap be pretty seamless or no?

Inspect the mounting points between the 2 engines to find the differences. I think the new engine has a reverse flow water pump?

What kind of belt system does the 351W have (serp or v)? If they are the same, I am goning to go out on a limb and say that most of your brackets should work, but you may need different length belts and may need to work on the spacing of the accessories to get the pulleys to line up right.

Unfortunately, most will not fit. The deck height on the two engines is different(8.2" on the 289 and 9.5" on the 351w), so while the accessory head bolt patterns are the same, they are farther away from the WP on the 351w. This means that brackets that connect to both the wp and head (virtually all of them) will not fit. Also, standard and reverse flow wps have different bolt configurations. Unless you are a capable fabricator, you will need new brackets.

You should be able to get away with buying an adaptor and a shorter bolt for the alternator. The P/S and A/C will be a different story, however you may be able to drill and tap a hole in the A/C bracket for your P/S and get it to work that way. (this is assuming you plan on swapping The damper, timing cover, water pump, and all the pulleys and brackets from the 289. Make sure to check the clearances on the timing cover before bolting everything down.)

Of course these are just ideas I've been bouncing around my head for the swap on my 68.

One last thing, Make sure you check hood clearance before slamming the hood down the first time, it can get a bit tight in there.

Hope this helped.

Our 289 was dropped into the back corner complete and thats how its staying. Might sell it later or simply keep it for down the road. When we got the 351w (79 to 81) I got all the brackets, p/s, a/c, alternator, smog/air pump, etc with the engine. P/S pump I might reuse as it seemed to work fine in the car it was removed from. Just need to clean it up and perhaps powder coat it. The A/C I'll replace when I order the Vintage Air setup. Who continues to use the old stock alternator after a resto... that new stereo, fog lights, dual electric fans on rad, etc, etc will require a bigger alt.

Smog pump... what smog pump..

Also the 351w we got has a serpentine belt setup if I remember correctly.
