What do you think?
I just went and looked at this '68 Fastback today that i saw on craigslist. Here is a link to the ad: http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/881628018.html
The paint on the car looks to be in great shape with just a few chips/blemishes and the car is pretty straight. It has a new built 351 and a built C-4 and the original 4spd. The cowl is solid as are the floors. all of the interior parts are there and are in great shape but the car needs to be wired. All of the frame rails are great also. He has all of the glass for it in good condition. I'm not trying to sell this for anyone, I'm just wondering what kind of deal this is and how much money it'll cost to get back together. Thanks...

Given the higher prices for fastbacks I don't really think it's a bad price. I would worry about the "little bubbles" in the paint. Is it really just a couple of bubbles or is the paint sitting on bad primer and the rest of it will bubble? It sounds like most of the parts are there so it is just mostly labor. However, I'll bet you could drop $2,500 real easy on "little" parts you need. Has the crate engine ever been run?
First thing that comes to mind... "I hate fixing someone else's repairs". Really.. why is the paint bubbling? If thats the quality of the workmanship in the restore imagine how the welding and body work was done. You could find that 1/2 the spot welds have 'popped' or that he used cheap primer and/or fill and the paint is lifting. Are those bubbles simple from a few drops of water in the lines while spraying or are they uncleaned rust reappearing?
I'm thinking 10,000 and thats the absolute tops. 8k would be a much better price. What exactly is included when he says he has "everything" to put the car back together? He have new weather striping? All the nuts, bolts, washers, fasteners included? Original wiring and if so what kinda of shape is it in, soft and pliable or hard, cracked and hacked to bits? Suspension.. new or 40 year old worn out equipment? It is the original chrome (condition) or new repo stuff? Steering, shocks, brakes, leaf springs, window regulators, hoses, heater case/core, gauges, linkage, brackets, grommets, radiator, etc, etc, etc.
The list goes on and on and you could still be looking at 10 to 15 grand to put it back together. On the other side he could be truthful and your looking at 4 to 5 grand to finish it.
I'd rather find an old rust bucket fastback for a few grand or a coupe for 1,000 or less. At least then you KNOW what your getting.

The paint is an older paint job and the only bubbles on it are where the bottom-front corners of the passenger door has some rust coming through and there is what looks to be an older chip on the cowl. All of the trim is there and in good shape (I don't think it is in good enough shape to be new repros). I didn't see any mounting hardware, though. The steering is all complete and on the car and tight and the springs are new but I didn't see shocks. The interior parts are all there and in good shape, but I didn't see the hardware. All of the weatherstripping is new and the side windows are in and they operate. There is no wiring that I Know of. He didn't build the engine himself, he bought it as a crate engine and has all the receipts for it. I was thinking 10k for it myself because i only see fastbacks for sale around here under 25k once every few years. I try to stay away from major rust because of my lack of knowledge on rust repair, but I'm good at the bolt ons lol. Thanks for the advice.

Here's another one around me that seems a little rediculous...

I paid more than that for my 69 and am still waiting on getting it out of the shop. I can tell you this, I have no rust on the body of my car either but at least (once I pay for the transmission rebuild) I will be able to drive it away.
I'm not sure but looking at that other ebay auction...maybe you should look outside your area for a fastback. I know the prices are not as expensive in Texas and the southeast areas.
