Default Question about hood hinges

I have a 68' and the hood sticks up about an inch at the back. The hinges are adjusted down as far as they'll go. Could this be just the springs? Or do worn out hinges cause this type of thing? Not sure what to do.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Its the hinges they tend to wear out. But if you want a cool alternitive Mustangs Unlimited has a Hood lift kit using gas shocks like the new mustangs. It comes in a kit with hardwear and instructions. Comes in black or stainless stell cost is $89.95 for black or $139.95 in stainless Part # is HLK4 www.Mustangsunlimited.com

There are a number of adjustments on the hood hinges and its easy to think they are all the way down. Play around with it again with a few buddies to help out. If that fails check to see if there is an autoshop in your area who work on classic cars and ask if they can help.

The springs would weaken over time but that shouldn't cause the hood to stick up. It's possible that the hinges are simply worn out.. I honestly don't know if that would be the cause or not.

I had the rear of our hood sticking up from the cowl and fought it for about 3 hours one afternoon. Ripped the hood and hinges out and did something else. Two days later I reinstalled the hinges and the hood and with only 2 adjustments had it level.

I've ordered 3 sets (2 sets from 1 vendor and 1 from another) of repos for our 67 and they all had issues. The hood bolt holes were cut in the wrong place on 1 set, the arms were bent and unusable on another set. Do whatever it takes to get those originals adjusted correctly as in my experience the repos are crap. Decided to cleanup, repaint the originals and replace the springs to low tension for the fiberglass hood.

I have the same problem and have tried every bolt but this has encouraged me to try again. Thanks

Did you try raising the hood extra high before tightening the bolts down to the aprons, counterintuitive I know but from what I have seen on the forums that is generally the solution.

Edit: The idea is to rotate the hinge back toward the cowl.

+1. Open the hood. loosen the mounting bolts at the fender. Have someone push the hood open (little force, don't go crazy). Tighten bolts. That will generally lower the rear. As said above, semms counter intuitive, but generally works.

yea I realized that you can open the hood, loosen it and then push it from the tip of the hood and it usually lowers the rear..

Clapped out Mustang hinges are an integral part of our classic cars personalities. Kinda like that pesky oil/tranny leak. It's all good.

My hinges were shot on my car, stuck up about a half inch in the back or so when everything else was lined up how it should. I believe my body shop said they were "shimmed" or something after 40 years of use. They bought new ones and it adjusted just fine then

+++1 gotta agreed. This procedure worked like a charm on my hood and leveled the rear with the cowl. Try it before going hog wild buying new hardware...good luck!!
