Default ditching cobra brakes, deciding on others

after a whole pile of problems im running into with my cobra brakes, ive decided to back up and go another route. the problems im having is that i didnt know this, but, the bracket setup i ordered was mainly for late model ford wheels. which is what im trying to stay away from. cause i already had 05 mustang wheels and hated it. my ultimate goal is for 17" torque thrust 2s with 4.5" BS.

so with the cobra brakes, i HAVE to run a spacer (at least a 5/16" with a 4.5" BS, which pokes it out to about 4.25" BS), other wise the wheel hits the caliper (i had no clue about it before i ordered the brackets ). and i have to use aftermarket 3" wheel studs, the old hubs, spacers, odd backspacing wheels, etc etc. just a whole deal of stuff i wanted to stay away from.

so ive realized the aftermarket willwood, baer, and SSBC brake kits all have a better setup. like the factory brakes, the studs are 1 piece with the rotor. and gives you plenty of clearance away from the caliper which means NO SPACER!

so basically, the cobra brake setup sounds real badass, and would be too, but in reality the other companies have it down better. they have already gone through the pain im going through now and fixed the problems.

but if you want to use late model ford wheels with a 5.72"+ backspacing, the cobra brake setup is PERFECT!

but luckily i got a KILLER deal on the calipers and rotors, so hopefully i can sell them for at least double from what i bought it all for. and then work my way up to a complete aftermarket kit. rather than piecing it together like i just did.

so my quesiton is, if i had about 1200$ to spend on front brakes, what kit does everyone recomend? i hear a lot of good things from SSBC, but it look kinda expesive to me. i would need the whole kit to bolt it up, with preferably 4 piston calipers. any suggestions on kits? websites?

When mounted on early Mustang hubs, the disc on SN95, Cobra, and SN97 spec rotors reside at least 1.35" further outboard compared to early OE Mustang's rotors. This necessitates mounting the caliper an equal amount outboard. This adversely affect wheel fit and the unsprung weight.

yeah the rotors from an 03 cobra along with the cobra caliper brackets moves the rotors toward the center of the car, which means you need LESS backspacing or spacers.

I have the cobra brake kit from Mustangsteve.com and can use normal BS wheels. If you get his brackets it will save you a bundle of money and use what you already have.

whats your backspacing? do you run a spacer? do you have the bracket kit for late model wheels or the other one?

so say i got this kit. it says i need to buy the plumbing and fitting parts seperately. but this just bolts up to the stock v8 spindle right? im assuming it does not use a drum hub. so it just bolts up like a factory setup would, correct?

would it fit 17x8 TT2s with 4.5" BS?

My front wheels are normal back spacing. 4.0 bs on 17*7 wheels. Here is a link to his website. http://www.mustangsteve.com/cobrabrakes.html

All you have to do is bolt them to your factory spindles. No wheel spacers or anything. The caliper bolts to the bracket. Easy as pie and very high quality.

I forgot to add. I had 6 cyl spindles originally and just put a want ad on craigslist for the spindles I needed. Someone contacted me and GAVE me the spindles and drum brake hubs I needed. I think I am into my whole front disc setup including a SSBC adjustable prop valve and wilwood master cylinder for $800 +/-. Much better cost than the Baer system that uses the same calipers IIRC.

THANK YOU RMODEL!

someone knows whatsup :P

yes i want big brakes.

68efivert, i have the brackets from streetortrack.com. they were cheaper, plus they come with centering rings to slide on the hub to center the rotor. mustang steve doesnt have that from what i heard.

here is what is currently on the car now, and not working...

and i wrote this

https://mustangforums.com/forum/show...=install+cobra

the problem with the brakes now is, the caliper stick out wider than the mounting face of the rotor. so the wheel hits the caliper. i talked to the guy at streetortrack and he said the kit i bought is mainly for late model ford wheels which need a spacer anyway.

i want to go with like wilwood cause the caliper mounts behind the mounting face of the rotor. then there is absolutely no worries about wheel spokes hitting the caliper. heres a picture from the wilwood assemble instructions PDF file...

so my question now is, does the wilwood kit put the hub face in the stock position or does it change the backspacing?
