Will this tranny fit?
You can use the stock linkage on a T5 bellhousing, but it requires some conversion parts, and I'm not a big fan of the way it's done. The stock speedo cable will work if you have a C4 or 3sp, not a 4sp.
The stock T5 shifter will work (although I'd rather go with a short shifter), the stock T5 shift lever will not. Classic Mustangs have the shifter hole mounted extremely far forward, necessitating a longer shift lever. The shift lever on the T5 is going to be much shorter, requiring you to reach really, really far forward to make the 1, 3, and 5 shifts. The stock classic shift lever won't bolt to the T5 shifter, so you need to either do some fabrication or simply buy a classic-style T5 shift lever from a Mustang vendor.

Does anyone know off hand what the overall driveshaft length would be for a 1968 T56 combo? I guess I need to google more, but haven't found it just yet.
Thinking about picking up a T56 to put behind my 347. Sounds like fun!

Short. You'd probably have to measure it after install. T56's aren't an easy install at all, so they're not a very common swap. They require raising the tunnel and relocating the shifter hole, among other things.
Why a T56? The majority of classic Mustangs can't really go fast enough to properly utilize a 6sp anyway (as opposed to late model F-bodies, Vettes, and Vipers). A TKO would be more than enough for most people.

If you use this http://www.mustangdepot.com/graphics...Cross%20Ad.pdf and http://www.mustangdepot.com/graphics...structions.pdf you do have to trim one cross brace the old way you cut out the full tunnel.

I just sold my Trans Am, which had 400rwhp and a T56. I'm assuming my 347 stroker should be sufficient to put power through a T56? I only ask about the driveshaft because I have an 03 Cobra driveshaft which measures, i beleive at 50 inches in length and was curious if it could be an option to just use it? But, your very right I'll just have to measure once the transmission is on the car. After all the searching for transmission options, I can get into a 6 speed for almost the cost of a 5 speed, I figured why not go for something I already had and was use too?

Hm, wasn't aware that crossmember worked with a T56. I remember those being rather large trannys. I still have my doubts about the shifter hole, though.
If you want to, go for it. I still don't believe it'll be that easy, but I'm sure it's possible. Remember though, using a drop crossmember is likely to alter the pinion angle, which may create issues with u-joints. Even a 2* change in pinion angle is enough to cause vibration issues and burn out u-joints.
But I'm still of the opinion that it's going to be too much of a PITA compared to a T5 or even TKO install, and you aren't going to really be able to utilize that 6th gear. Your F-body would cruise at 140 (my roommate had a stock LT1) thanks to superb aerodynamics; your Mustang won't be able to do that safely.

That is true! It sure was nice in the TA... I'd be cruising on the highway and drop it in 6th, it would just coast along almost at an idle with 3.42's.
BTW, I plan to run 4.30 gears in the Mustang, with the 6speed I'm hoping to see it'll be a nice combo!

I am about to tackle the T56 install in my 68. I am only waiting on the tranny. It has been on back order for over a month now. I have heard a lot of debate over trimming the trans tunnel or not. I already have Ron Morris lowering motor mounts and purchased an adjustable cross member from DVSrestorations.com. I have had two builders tell me that I won't have to cut the tunnel with my parts combo and will retain the correct pinion angle. Another guy wasn't so sure and felt that I would have to trim the floor brace. I will report back once I am able to start the project.
The big difference for me going with a T56 over my current T5 or a TKO600 is having two overdrive gears. 5Th gear in a T56 is .8 IIRC and the 6th gear ratio is about.62. The thing I don't like about the T5 I have now is the drop in RPM from 4th to 5th. The T56 will make it feel like a road race TKO600 yet retain the appeal of the final ratio of the standard T5 or T56.

Honestly, I think that gear combo would make 1st gear pretty much useless. You'll be able to burn tires just great, but that's about all 1st gear is going to get you.
That was always my issue with the TA, I could spin first gear up pretty high MPH wise with the 3.42 gears. I always wanted a deaper first gear, never did get my 4.10's in the car before I decided to let it go.
