Unhappy One step forward, three steps back

I stopped by to see my car in the shop today and the guy was just getting started on it. A couple hours later I get a call and he tells me that the starter is bad, ok no big deal. Then he tells me that the bell housing to the C6 is cracked. I already knew that it had a small chip near one of the bolts but didn't think it would be a problem. The guy tells me that it's unrepairable and that I should start looking for a new tranny.

This is my own fault because I got the transmission for free anyways and thought I could get by with it being chiped. So my question to you all is what route should I go for getting a replacement. It it worth shelling out the money for a new one, or can I trust a rebuilt one? Also, where should I start looking. I just looked on Ebay and they had a couple for around $700 which is much better than a new one on summit or jegs. I don't have the cash right now anyways so this is something I'm gunna have to wait on. I'd like to stay around $1000 but for that I would want something that can handle 400HP. Any suggestions?

One step forward, three steps back, thats what i refer to as the classic car polka

anyway. the c4 does fit on a 390 at least in galaxies, but they are all the same
the only mods i think you would have to do is the trans mount, and a shorter drive shaft going from a c6 to a c4.

bodyputtyless, had a trnas for free in the Annapolis MD region i dont know if it is a c4 or c6 (thats why i didnt get it) but if you are close to maryland you might want to talk to him

Considering I just bought a new drive shaft I think I'll stick with a C6.

Do you have a BB or SB in your car? A C4, C6, 3-speed and 4-speed will all fit. The difference is the bellhousing.

That said.. why do you need to buy a new trany? If its just the bellhousing thats cracked just get a replacement bellhousing.

Tell him you will start looking, but he should finish everything else. One cracked bolt hole is not the end for a C6. It should be fine for a while until you save the scratch for a new or rebuilt one. I didn't think a C4 would fit a big block either, but hey, what do I know!

I may just be an idiot but I thought it was all one piece. But I specifically asked the mechanic if I could just replace the bellhousing and he said no. I only talked to him briefly over the phone so tomorrow I will actually look at it in person.

Ah yes the C6 is all one piece isn't it. Sorry about that. Thought it was a separate piece like the C4 and toploaders.
