Default '67 Motor Size?

I have a '67 notch back that came original Straight 6 and a 3 spd tranny. I need a new engine and want a v8. I was wondering If a 390 motor would fit it? If not, whats the biggest I could drop in?

Sure, you can get a 390 in it, but IMHO this makes a dog out of most any Mustang. You are adding LOTS of weight to the front which will make it nose heavy. This will cause it to handle like an oversped farm tractor.

You would be much better served to use a Windsor motor of some description. They can be built for LOTS of torque these days. Given the light weight of your Mustang a Wndsor motor will make it fly. Don't forget to upgrade the transmission, rear axle and brakes while you're at it.

Better yet, sell your six cylinder car to someone who wants an economy ride and buy one of the gazillion early Mustangs that are always on the market.

My $0.02,

Only problem with that, is that around here, its actually kind of hard to find a DECENT '60 somethin mustang that does not cost a fortune, or in **** poor condition. That and I was considering making it a drag car...but not sure..

Many v8 motors fit without any major surgery in a 67.

What are you goals for the car? use for the car? budget for the car?

These are the 3 things that are really governing your motor choice.

You can save weight on a 390 buy ditching the cast iron heads, intake and manifolds. Go aluminum and you'll easily save 200 lbs.

You'll need to ditch that tranny and get yourself a C-6. Probably need to upgrade the rear end to a 9 inch. New axles for the 5 lugs.

The comments that a 390 makes a Mustang a dog, I challenge your words.

Going Aluminum is what I would do. And not to sure about budget, but I am willing to spend money to get good parts. I just want her to smoke the tires if you gave it a little bit too much gas, or more like a street legal drag car... Think a 4 or 5spd and 9" 4:10 setup?

Are springs all you would need suspension-wise for a swap?

And If I do go through with this, would I have to mod anything to get the trans. to mount?
