Default Another dumb question

forgive me for asking so many questions, but i have never built a motor before and I am trying to beat the cold because my garage at home doesnt have heat, and thats where im doin the motor.

the top gear of the timing set, how does this come off?, i unbolted the [balancer?] and thought it would slide freely like the bottom gear?

do i need to buy another puller ill never use again? or do i just need to work it off via brute force?

Sounds like you need a Shop Manual, it'll come in handy for more than just building that engine. That's all I know that might help, good luck!

ok i think you have the gears mixed up.

the top gear is the bigger one on the camshaft.

the lower one is on the crank

for the top gear, theres just a bolt with a offset ring for the fuel pump. unbolt it, then itll slide off. then theres 2 bolts holding the camshaft blocking plate on.

for the bottom gear, it should just slide off with a pry bar, or get a gear puller.

if the top gear doesnt come right off the cam, then use the pry bar and lightly pry on each side so it comes off straight.

Thre should be a bolt holding the top gear too. It holds the fuel pump cam onto the camshaft too. Remove that and it should come off by wiggling it back and forth. If not, you can put a screwdriver behind it to help (carefully).

You need a shop manual or a DVD, check Ebay for a disassembly and assembly DVD on your engine. If you think you have questions now wait until you start putting it together. If you've never built an engine before your going to have hundreds of questions.

Good luck!

I ordered the book today, but untill it is delivered, could someone give me some insight on pulling the camshaft itself out, i do not have any special tools for this.... do i need them?
all i have been told by my friends and other mechanics at work is pull it out by hand and dont bump any of the lobes.

how much force does it take to pull it out? and what can i use to get a grip to pull it out?

much apreciated

Take a long bolt the same size as one of the small ones you took off to get the gear off.
Thread it into the cam its now a handle for you to help pull the cam out.
Go slow and try not to let it fall as it comes passed the bearings.
If it just drops hard and you drag it out bumping at every stop you will nick the cam bearings.

Search mustang monthly site or any mustang/ford mag site for a cam swap and you can look at how they pull the old and in with the new.

You have it made in todays instant info. I had to ask some old fart like myself or learn by my mistakes.

Damn now I am an old fart thinking your lazy go find this out for yourself kid. lol
Joking hope this helps.
