when you stan din front of the car and look at the right hand cylinder head, then there is a stamping on the block hear where it meets the head. Kinda like between distibutor and oil sensor. should look somethign like this
5F23
first number is year, second is month. A-Jan, b=feb, ... I doesn't exist so skip when counding. last two are day in the month

Hiya. isn't that just the model? I'm quite sure I have a C5ae as well but it's made in 66 (according to my datecode). as in 1965 model 289 which is probably used for a few years?!

Kalli, you are correct. Now that I reread his question and the thread, he is asking about the year it was produced, not the version.

C5AE-6015E

C - 1960's
5 - 1965
A - Full Size Ford
E - Engine

6015 - basic part number

E - Engineering version

One thing I noticed, is that the numbers don't tell you it's a 289.

Thanks Gary H for the link to that decoding page!

Kali described the stamped 'build date'. That is the date the motor was actually assembled at the factory.
There is also a casting date on the block near the part #.
