302 or 351?
And if you find someone willing to trade a 72 Sportsroof for a 70 Fastback, also have them send me their bank account number, social security number, and what time of day they shower, because they are a fool. (No offense, 71-73 owners, STRICTLY talking values!)
yea 302s never came with the 71-73 machs... as far as trading i would keep the bigger tougher looking 72 but i guess i am a little biased, lol mine really grew on me.. i would not be too upset with the 72 at all.. there are a lot of parts out for them now and people are really starting to like them... i am starting to see a few more at car shows now.. but its your car do what makes you happy bud. also make sure its a really mach, i believe there is a Q in the VIN.
A real easy way to tell the difference between a 351 and a 302 is the deck height.
On a 302 it will look like the heads are sitting right on top of the waterpump. On a 351 there is an inch of block between the waterpump and the heads.
Also the difference in the manifolds. On the 351 there will be a 'step' on the manifold behind behind the distributor and on the 302 there is no 'step'.

Several folks said here, RE: "302 not offered on a Mach1"
My book is conflicting with this data. It says the 302 was the standard engine on the 71-73 Mach1. Three 351s were optional in 71-72 and 429 was optional in 71.
(BTW this engine does not look like a 351C.)
The book also says the standard Mach1 engine was the 351 in 1969 and 70.
Maybe this is where the difference in data origionates?
Vin codes for 1972:
F = 302
H = 351 2v
Q = 351 4v CJ
R = 351 4v HO
Door data plate for Mach1 package = 63R
"05" just means "sportroof" which was an option on non-Mach1s

here is the site that i got my info off of
http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/Blommel/72.htm
according to it an 02 designates a sportsroof and an 05 designates a mach 1
and a F designates a 302 2v
