A new lift only cost $1500 but you can always buy an inexpensive set of ramps and drive the front of the car onto them then lift the rear with a $30 car jack and place jackstands under that. Or you can just buy that lift.

I use drive up ramps which work well for oil changes, tranny service, etc. The only trick is getting them to stay in place if you have a slick painted floor like I do. They are no good for doing suspension work because the car is supported by the tires, but good and quick if that is what you need.

Dig a hole in your driveway just wide enough for you to fit in,Lay down and have someone drive your car over you and just fix it as needed.

Seriously,Ramps and jack stands installed properly are probably the cheapest,or maybe you have a friend who is a mechanic and can let you use their equipment after hours?

If you want to stand, a lift is the only way ( or a pit) else, drive-up ramps are inexpensive. We used to use air powered bumper jacks back in the 70's @ the garage I apprenticed at. We could get the cars up about 3 feet or so.

You could just get that machine from Honey I Shrunk the Kids and get really small and walk under there and look. However it may be tough to pick up a wrench at that point.

We have a place near Baltimore that you can rent a lift in a 4 bay garage for about $15 an hour. They also rent tools and offer advise. I don't if every city has one but this one seems very professional and affordable.

Pull up one side of the car on top of the curb and leave the other in the road. Remember to sweep out the gutter beforehand. Plenty of space underneath to do what needs done like that.
