Default Painters advice needed

Let me start out by saying I am not building a show car. This is going to be a driver. I do want it to look good though! I am going to shoot my car myself in a booth. I have done my own in the past (65 stang coupe, 48 ******, 68 and 84 camaros). I have always used Dupont Chroma Premier systems. I am going to go with a red that will match my sons 95 GT. It is Rio Red. The cost for this paint is about 500.00 a gallon just for the color.

I was surfing around and found a company called TCP Global. They will mix the Rio for 230.00 a gallon in "Restoration Shop Urathane Base Coat" , and 2K Speed clear for 139.00/ gal. Is there really that big a difference in this paint and the 500 a gallon stuff for what I'm trying to do??

Like I said I do want it to look good and be easy to work with.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Default Yea what he said

I painted my 69 vert with some cheap paint and it looks...ok....you can see it here http://www.knowledgeorb.com/mustang . It looks alright but its a 10 footer for sure. I was thinking of to $500 gal too to see if I got better results. I would also like to know if there is a cheaper option that is good.

My dad paint 220 for a paint kit and self ecthing primer. I'm going to go to the same place and get my paint. It is a Sherwin Williams Automotive store.

The kit came with paint, clear, and all the stuff needed to add to the paint and clear like activator and reducer.

if your using dupont just stick with them, consider the Nason line. you will get you paint for half the price and have good life out of it.

personally i like PPG more, and their Shopline system works great for collision repair work or the do it yourselfer.

I have no experience with TCP global.

Your more expensive paints cover quicker, i like 2 coats of base, wetsand with 2k grit 2 more base then the clear personally.

No expert by any means. I have used the Nason singal stage for the interior, came out great but i want to have a lasting paint job so i am using PPG Deltron for the exterior. I did some test panels and the Nason covers better but also chips real easy. my paint is 700 a gallon, looked at cheaper ways out but i have learned you get what you pay for.

Back when I was learning how to paint I shot my girlfriends Escort and the same thing the base was expensive but I could buy some acrylic enamel at half the price, so I did. The paint was faded beyond repair in 18 months and I realized then the extra couple hundred dollars would have bought me a paint that would have looked great for ten years plus. At that moment the extra money didn't seem like all that much and I would have rather had the glossy paint. That issue wont be the same with a base clear system but what will be your issue?

Default So BA now did that look

So you got a kit from Sherwin Williams but you did not say how it looked or held up. $220 sounds cheap but how was it? Was it automotive paint? What paint line was it...

My paint was less than that you can see the car on my web site I want this to be a good paint job as its alot of work....so were you happy with the SW paint? If so give me more info I may go that path....

Stick with the Dupont Chroma Premier. If its a money thing, take your time and save the extra $250. I have seen a car done with a kit from Sherwin Williams and it did look good after being painted, but the clear is HORRIBLE. After cutting and buffing the red almost looked a different lighter FADED color.

I know your not looking for a show paint job, but spend the extra money. You wont be disappointed with the results.

I used TCP paint for our BC/CC paint and it worked really good. I used the Non Metalic paint because I was not up for the "metalic problems". I bought 1 kit and an extra gallon of clear so I could shoot 4 coats of clear.
The real key is prep work and a good gun to shoot with. I used a Finex 3000 with good results (1.3mm tip).
Be sure to use epoxy primer and seal coat.

Here are some pictures of primer and BC/CC:

We also built an outdoor paint booth to shoot in. Lessons learned and pictures here:

You can get good results if you take your time and pay attention to details.
