Default Transmission seals

My three speed auto is leaking like mad. The transmission is an Aamco rebuilt installed in 1991 with about 20,000 on it. It was fine when I got the car but ever since I have had the car apart fixing the body it has been dripping away. Most likely it was lack of use for 17 years that did it. Anyway, a reputable shop near here (the owner likes working on classic Mustangs) said they would pull the transmission and replace all the seals for $350. I do not have the time, tools, skill, or room to do it myself. How does that price sound?

$350 is a steal for anything involving pulling it, and any sort of work on an automatic
not too much skill to do it, if you read a book or a nice write up about it
as far as tools, they are not anything uncommon for a c4
but room and time are a big factor, i say spend the 350 and have it done correctly once and be done with it

I can drop my t5 and replace the front and rear seals and put it back in and drive the car in under 3 hrs now

350 sounds like a good deal maybe just a bit high but I bet it will be done well..I say go for it.

I'm no expert on transmissions but heres my story.

My car has 74,000 miles on her now. She sat for 8 months a year before my Dad bought her and she sat in his garage with only a few thousand miles a year put on her.

I got her and started driving her every weekend. A small gasket started leaking and I had that fixed for about $50. Then the tranny started slipping so I had it adjusted. About a month later it took a major dump. I ended up paying $1100 to have it completely rebuilt.

My concern in your case would be that if all the seals have dried out like mine did and you repair some things, will that put extra pressure on the other old parts which will then fail. This is what I think happened to mine.

I personally would get a price to rebuild the whole thing rather than pay $350 now and then have to turn around and have it rebuild soon after.

Take it and fly with the wind. THATS A BARGAIN. anything for that price is good. especially cause they have to take out the trannie. take out the rear main seals on the gears the front seal, idk if there doing and internal job, but if they do... then good luck. umm then they have to realighn everything again and put it in. thats a fair price, in my regards.

I would take that deal if I were you.

My transmission has about 13 years (45k miles) since a rebuild on it and leaks some as my garage floor would attest to.

I am debating eventually having mine rebuilt or trying to find an upgrade like a C4 I have been talking to a local guy about.
