Default 40+ year old trunk gasket

So I looked at my trunk gasket yesterday. I did not know rubber could transform into something both rock-hard and powdery at the same time : ) Anyway, is installing a new one as simple as glueing it on? Any tricks ?

i used 3M weatherstripping adhesive. As far as i know that is exactly what was used to 'glue' it on. I think the original is yellow, but I used black. i used it the full way round. made a bead

I used the black 3M adhesive stuff too. Worked great, I put a bead around the trunk lid and the same on the weatherstrip, let them become tacky, then stuck them together. Super easy. The seam was at the hood latch/striker plate area on the trunk lid.

I installed mine while I had the car apart. It seems like it would be VERY difficult to do properly while the lid was installed.

Check under the trunk mat and the bottom of the quarters for rust. The worst and most likely place to get rust is the edge of your gas tank where water can collect in the groove.

Your replacement gasket is more poly than natural rubber and will last much longer and not harden liker the old one. Good luck.

I made a thread about 9 months ago about the same. Very good answers helped me achieve good results. Make sure to read the section about the adhesive!!! Very important you use the 3 strand system explained.
